1970 W30 Convert TRIBUTE build, 11.20 ET GOAL.

So, will keep the members informed and also looking for insight/help as needed. I have done plenty of Chevies, but like the guys tell me in my area, "this ain't no CHEVY, so your starting ALL over again. Here is the car I purchased like this.

It is all correct on a Cutlass S platform. It DOES have a 1971 W30 rear end with 3.42, 2200 GM stall supposed to be OEM W30 convert, BUT running a T350. Might keep that or might swap out to OD trans next summer. Car WILL be built with that convert/trans rear and see where we land. Motor is a bit of a mystery at this time? Supposed to be a good FORGED bottom end that can take 300+shot of nitrous??? Heads say F but casting number say G. Intake is OEM 1970 W30 and holley 800S-bore carb. Cam is 1970 4sp W30 and has 1.6 roller rockers with guide plates.

NEW build is to freshen the shortblock with new rings and bearings, and see exactly what we have. Have a Holley Sniper EFI already sitting, so using that, Ported Speedmaster heads with ported Torker AND performer intake just to see the difference in drivability and ET, Solid roller cam that yet to be determined on specs. 1.75 headers and just SEE where we are?

Talked to a few others on here, and looked at there builds and results, I'm sure we will get to the goal or be very close. We at the shop have a bit of a different idea on going fast on the street? We have a bunch of parameters that were following for this car! Things like being able to highway drive and cruise at 70/75MPH for hours, docile enough for my wife to drive it to cruise nights or work, put my 4yr old son in the back seat and go for ice cream. Now in the past, with a Chevy, or LS and even the new Gen III Hemi's, this is very easy to meet the goal with these parameters. Now let see what we can do with OLDS power.

Thanks, car will look close to the same now, but have 15 x 10's SSI wheels on the way. And will have 15 x 6 SSIs up front. Want to keep the OEM correct look.

Going to get the heads checked out, check out the 2.125 valves, and get the porting of heads and intake started today. Will get some pictures of heads as they are now, and once were done the porting.

And so it begins!!!!

CURRENT plan is to PULL engine this fall, it has about 8000 miles since it was built, runs string still. BUT like to know exactly what were dealing with? So short block "should" just be a ring and bearing deal and deglaze cylinders, back together and fresh paint, HOPEFULLY!

BAM solid rollers are on order, CAM will be ordered later this year once we get a handle on shortblock. So that leads us to heads and intake.

Current before of intake

So little updates! SPEEDMASTER heads and TORKER intake are being reworked/ported as we speak. Will post a start of the heads tomorrow. BUT new 15 x 10 SSI wheels are in, just need to go get them sometime. New SS headers showed up. 1 7/8's primaries and 3" collectors as well as NEW BAM solid roller lifters arrived too.

Looks good, are they an Ebay /offshore purchase ? I've heard good things about them and likely what I'll lean to, and sell my nos 2" Hooker ceramics.
I'll be looking for the 10" SS1 pics because that's another future purchase for me. I see alot of similar goals here, I'll survive for the mean time living vicariously thru this thread !

Its what we got and I know it made the goal in another mild combo I got from Dale as a guideline to run 11.20's. Plus need to kill some of the bottom end tq for the street tires. .

MIGHT want to rethink the 15 x 10 and drop back to 15 x 8's SSI as tires are getting very few and far between now that Mickey Thompson being bought by Goodyear and drop a lot of 15 inch rim sizes. I'm looking at Nitto 555r2's 325/50R15 as it's a good size tire. I've also considered a 275/60R15 as both the 275 and 325 are about 28 inches tall. A 295/50R15 and 275/50R15 are about an inch and a half shorter. AND the 10 inch wide rim is not "recommended" for the 275 as the manufacturers say max rim width of 9 inches? 10 will be fine just ride a tad rougher and stretches the side wall a bit too.

Rick there not terrible, but it does just seem wrong to me? It "looks" like the rim is wider then the thread of that tire.

Take a look at post #7 in this thread, 325/50r15 tire on a 15 x 15 wheel and even gives the backspacing you need to fit these cars:

YES that is what I'm looking for with my stuff. AND needs a bight of height as well. I want a min of 28" tall tire. BUT with this supply-chain Covid-crap stuff, getting a 325 or 315 is difficult and only be a couple people making them

I assume you are aware of the NHRA rules to run the car, including roll bar, driveshaft loop, metal valve stems, etc.

YEP, but not worried about the rollbar and not doing one. MOST street night is never an issue. AND YES my 1969 Nova SS with the 396 went 10.42 with no bar and they did ask me not to come back without it. Will get the D/S loop and better belts, but NOT doing the bar. Just like running 5.5 and 5.6 testing with a cert or lic. Just tune to the 1/8 and the 1/4 will be fine. Track guys do wonder when you run 10.30's and under WAY under 70 MPH!!!!!!

Well it's been going slow and of course, my stuff gets pushed back behind regular customer stuff. So just been getting a few things. DID get the 15 x 10s and 315/50r15 Nittos mounted. Had a small time to inner wheel well, but went on ok and turned out nice.

Looks good, whose rims did you purchase ? The last 10" wide rim I used was a regular Cragar and with L50x15 tires on a '69 442.
I'll only have a 3.31 gear this time around and I am considering an 295/50/15 on my '68, (may wish I had a 28" tall for traction tho'). I didn't use air shocks back in the day but did have HD coils and overload shocks and no rub.

  1. Rims are Wheel Vintiques Olds SSi. Was able to find a pair NEW on here and worked the deal. Now the front ship out tomorrow from Coker, the only ones with some supply in stock. Looked for a couple months and went bsck to Coker.
