not doing a frame off, but new paint, interior, motor tweaked and detuned back to "original", not going crazy, just trying to stop some decay and get it out and drive/enjoy it again

What kind of engine is that? Oil fillers on the left valve cover? And the Ram air looks completely different from anything I've seen on a 70.

It's an olds 455, the breathers were cut in on both valve covers to make it breathe better, they tell me, and the ram air was butchered for the same reason......but I got new valve covers and ram air assembly for the resto!

Do you have disc brks. on the frt.? Because that is a factory original master cylinder I believe that was originally a 442 4 speed car and not a W-30 optioned car. The red inner fender plates (fender wells) may have been added early in it's life. It is diffently a 4 speed car as the pic you have looks correct to me. Also I cannot verify via your pic that those are the correct stripes for a W optioned or not.

Do you have the Fisher Build sheet? Did you look behind the LF frt. bucket seat back plastic cover, stuffed in the springs? Under the carpet in the LF floor area?

Dave, Cooper Chevy Olds around Lansing, was the sponsor back in the day....It has disc front brakes, nothing under the carpet, will check the seat for the build sheet. It has all the W-30 items, alum intake, f-heads, emblems, red inner fenders (one cut for the old hooker headers ), checking on the cam, the trunk stripes were added long ago to match the hood stripes and give it the skunk look

Ok, I am with you about Cooper/Cevy Olds. That could mean a lot! That does not mean that the W-30 items were added to meet class. All cars sold had to meet AMA Manufacturers specs as stated in the AMA Booklet when leaving the factory. All of the cars given/sold to drag racers had to meet this requirment due to federal oversite. I checked my original info and a pwr. brake was not available with a 4 sd. W-30. It does not make sense about the master brk. booster! We always removed anything that was not required to reduce weight! Hmmmmm ! The cut for the big 2" Hookers or JR brand does not mean anything. I used the 1 3/4" JR brand on my small block factory drag cars too that wrapped around the frame as did the 2"/2 1/4" BBO for true "equal lenght tuned headers" !

Find the Fisher Build sheet! Also contact Casey Marks he is the nephew of Jack Marks who raced for the Cooper Chevy/Olds dealership.

Ok, to add were the holes for the W-30 fender emblem looked like they were drilled or "punched by a die" ? The holes will be real qriusp with no sharp edges

507OLDS said the booster looks to be one for all drum and is missing the metering valve.....

just means that the inner fender is hacked up and worth less..just like the OAI air cleaner, the whole inside where the flapper was, was cut out to increase airflow...

Also contact Casey Marks
Is he here on the boards? or still in the Lansing area?

Any other insight on Cooper Chevy/Olds and racing heritage is greatly appreciated!

The 1st picture shows "G heads not the "F" you talked about....as I'm sure you know the W-30 4 speed cars never had power brakes as well...
Have you been lucky enough to find the build card that specifies the W-30 option? Good luck with the car....she looks solid.
Scott...

20 years ago when my father and I put the car back together, he knew the importance of the F heads (and he didn't want the local machine shop to muck them up), so they were set aside to be dealt with at a later date, the G heads were used to get the car running. I have the F heads and they are going to the machine shop with the motor to get matched back up! I will pull the gas tank this weekend and see if there is a build sheet on top of it, nothing under the seat or carpet, and I have read that lansing cars don't have a good track record for a consistant spot for the build sheet, but I will keep looking..

The power brakes have many people puzzled, 507OLDS says the master cylinder appears to be for an all drum car, this has discs on the front..so still trying to track that info down.

Body is in primer now! (still need to block and sand, repeat, but progress is good) My daughter even wanted to ride down to TN with me!! And good news the trans tag was still on and the VIN on the casing matches the car VIN!! Woo Hoo!! Not so lucky on the block, I knew the original block was damaged way back when, so we had a doner 455 installed in 1989

Less than 30 days and it's already stripped, body work done and first coat of primer applied. That's insane. Guess it's true what they say.....It pays to know someone.
My first car was a 70 442, post coupe 4 speed back in 79. I should post that one in the "car you wish you still had" thread going now.
Good luck,

Nice, Ive owned a 70 post Cutlass for about 12 years now. They are very nice looking cars especially with the extra trim around the windows/post.

Yes in this case, being related helps! It should be painted before the engine is done (another month or so).....keeping my fingers crossed! The worst area on the whole car, was on the underside of the hood near the latch....Mice had made a home, and water got there thru the locking pin hole. He cut out a section and welded/blended a new piece back in!!

Not much progress, the weather has not been cooperating down in TN. Need to haul the car out to get the firewall and other components sandblasted. Looks like next week Motor has been torn down, no surprise, the cylinder walls were scuffed. One surprise was the repair on the crankshaft.....not sure I remember that being done 20 years ago, but could have been.....I was 17 and had a girlfriend, apparently I wasn't totally in tune with this rebuild with Dad as I should have been! Ordered new crank, and all the other rotating parts, should be delivered this week. Block has been dipped and checked over, heads have been reviewed and cleaned.....pulley's and brackets and aluminum intake cleaned up and looking new!!

Looking forward to my 40th birthday and the OCA REO Olds Homecoming June 18th in Lansing
