Had some time today so I got the crank installed, and all of the pistons.
where the starter mounts there are numbers stamped. (682) not sure what that means.
On both sides there are letters stamped by each cylinder.
RH SIDE: >C,C,B,C
LH SIDE: B,B,C,C
From what I remember reading these were done at the factory and it told which piston to use for each cylinder.
though not sure what the ">" is for above the C on the #2 piston
So I had a few setbacks since starting the engine rebuild.
First one was while installing the crank I used the rope seal and after torquing down all the bearing caps I could not turn the crank. I loosened the main bearing cap and I could turn it so it was binding up on the rope seal. So I looked here on CO and found that a lot of you guys use the two piece rubber seal for the 460 so I went to auto parts store and got a BS40654 seal and put that in.
The second one was my upstairs tub/shower got cracked in the tub part so I tore the whole thing out and got a new shower stall at home depot and have spent the last few weekends putting new plumbing and shower stall in, then sheet rocking, taping, texture, and painting.
Then last weekend I got the camshaft, timing chain, and cover on, installed the heads, lifters, push-rods, and rocker arms. Went to install water pump and one of the threads in the tapped hole in the timing cover for one of the smaller bolts was stripped. So I had to pull the cover back off and took it to work and had one of the guys grind off the part that stick out and then TIG weld a nut on. I went ahead and had them do both of the ones that are inside the cover.
I also found a problem with the gasket for the oil filter housing. The gasket kit had the wrong one. Had to go and get a new one at auto parts store.
