Seat Covers
from usapartssupply came today color looks good a little bright but really close. I went to legendary and tried to order a set for my 70 cutlass light blue but they were not listed in their online catalog so I sent off an email. I got one reply but he thought I wanted them for a supreme so I replied no just a plain jane and then I think he went on holidays because I never heard from him again. So I clicked on one of the ads on their website and ordered from them. 100 bucks cheaper great I said. 6 weeks later they arrive from pui. Oh Oh, cause I know they don't have the best rep. So far so good though. I'll get pics up soon. Cheerio

One back done. I used the plastic bag the covers came in to help slip the new cover on then pulled the plastic outand added some stuffing on the edge. This is the drivers side back. Question, which way does the head rest latch face to the outside or inside? My kit did not come with head rest material so I'll reuse my originals. If I scrub them real hard they will be close. I have a little pucker on one side so far but livable.

I know Legendary sells the 70 blue seat covers because my friend ordered/recieved a set, along with the rest of hi interior parts. He ordered directly from Legendary. His is the same as yours,70 'S'/442 hardtop.
Regardless of what you have, make sure you reuse the button washer clips on the backsides of the old covers.Without them, your buttons will pop off in short time.

Thanks Brian the buttons came with washers and were the kind you split open. They won't be coming off unless the head breaks off. But I'll keep my originals just in case. cheers Orrick

Brian,
I have had PUI covers in my 70 442 hardtop now for 11 yrs. It fit ok and all but the pebble grain wasn't nearly as deep or pronounced as the original material plus it is kind of shiny. At the time, I think they were the only game in town so I used them. My first car was a 70 442 so I remember what the original pebble grain looked like. This ain't it!
I have since poked a hole in the driver seat by having a pencil in my pocket when I sat down. (JACKA$$) I know I could just have that madrid panel replaced but since I've never really been happy with the pebble grain, I am thinking about just buying all new seat covers from Legendary. The grain in some pics they have sent me looked like it was deeper and more like the original material but they weren't great pics. Kind of blurry.
You've seen the Legendary material in person and I'm sure with as many cars as you've parted out you've seen lots of original covers, do you think the pebble grain on the Legendary covers is closer to the original than the PUI stuff? IE, deeper, rougher looking pebble grain?
Thanks,
Randy

I'm trying some foam strips as we chat. Getting closer. I'm also stripping the paint for a new coat of midnight blue and white stripes and looking for a trunk lid and oh yeah I almost forgot about that work thingy

Which way should I put these washers on the buttons. I just put 1 on the back with the cup facing the button but they sent so many I wonder if they should be doubled with cups facing each other or away from each other? The car is starting to take shape. Just wish we had more sunshine. Woke up to new snow this morning. Yuck cheers Orrick

ps I tried to order an oldsmobile script for the front grille from opgi they want 28 for the script and 96 for shipping ouch so I went to parts place they want 26 but have not said how much for shipping. From early-bird.ca they want 56 but the script does not look right. Any way some more pics for you

Most places aren't going to give you anything for free. I'd count the buttons you have and put at least one washer on each button. You don't want the sharp outer edge of the washer rubbing the fabric so I would install the washers with the high center point facing the button/fabric. That also leaves that raised rib facing the fabric, again, holding the edge of the washer away from the fabric.
Nice job on the covers.
Some friendly advice from someone who has done this.... It's understandible to want to pull the covers nice and tight but that in and of itself can cause puckers. This is especially true if you're reusing the original seat foams. The foam has been squeezed in that shape for a long time and will remain in that shape unless you do something about it. IE, install new foams or build the originals up to fill the new covers. The new seat covers are made to fit foams that are the correct/original size. So if you put new seat covers over old, crushed foam, the covers will look too big and that's where you fall into the trap of pulling them tighter trying to make the new "large" covers fit small/crushed old foam.
It looks like some of the puckers you have may be due to the original foam being crushed/smaller. If you're going to use the original covers, it's a good idea to spray them down with water so that the foam soaks the water up and expands back to it's original size or at least as close as it's going to get to the original shape/size. Let it dry before putting the covers on. You may still need to add a 1/2" layer or so here or there. Getting a good fit using old foam takes some trial and error but it can be done. Use 3m super trim adhesive to glue new layers onto the original foam. Also, if the foam has good shape but is just thin overall, apply the new layer to the underside of the foam. This way, you make it thicker but retain the original contour. This isn't possible in all places. You may have to put small pieces in here or there. Just try to place them such that their edge is at a bolster/piping. This will help hide the edges of the added piece.
By the way, I found that the chinsy cord they provide leaves alot to be desired. I threw that away and used lengths of 12 gauge electrical "house" wire with the plastic insulation still on it. MUCH stronger and will retain it's shape if you need to bend it.
DO NOT let 3m trim adhesive overspray get on the seat covers!
Have fun and use PLENTY of hog rings.

When installed correctly, the conical washer will suck the button into the cover some,so it's not sticking out to snag on things.Technically, you could use small fender washers back there. The main object is to give something for the button tangs to hold onto.If you just install the bottons through the covers, and do not use any washer, the tangs are holding onto the cover material only,& it will eventually pull out.
Yes,there is a difference between the Legendary fabrics & grains, compared to the PUI. Even my dark saddle covers are slightly different. They have more detail to them, and look like my originals. The differences between the brands are hard to distinguish, unless you have them next to each other,or you have an experienced eye.

Front seat done. Not too bad the color is really close you can tell from the original head rests. Got most of the pucker out from the drivers seat back. Back seat coming up. The bottom of the rear seat is mint if anyone is interested. I will be extra careful in it's removal the back seat back has sun damage across the top too bad. Got most of the car into primer now for the final block sanding then off to my friend for paint.

Grill Emblem
I have a grill emblem for you. I somehow ordered the wrong one, it does not fit the Supreme grill. It's yours for $20 shipped. (It's the repro from The Parts Place or Year One, I forget which).
I've sold and traded parts with several guys one here no problem. Here's a link to my original posting with pictures of the part: https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...tml#post185939

I started out this thread with seat covers and added my $100 dollar paint job which has passed 1000 so far. Rear seats done now with some pucker from sewing I assume. I'll add some padding when we get to warmer weather and the vinyl has time to stretch. here are some more pics

Beautiful color. You've done a fantastic job on the car.
What happened to the 1/4 panel trim pieces that are part of the rear deck reveal? Not sure if I have spares, but if I do I'll send them your way. Just got back from Surrey on Thurs, if I'd known I might have been able to drop them off. Anyway, the trim is minor. You have a gorgeous car that will turn heads wherever it goes. I think they call it a 'chick magnet'.
