Am I mistaken or do the bucket seat foam buns get stiffer as they age? I ask because the Driver's seating position in my 442 is a bit high and I think part of it is because the foam is stiff. It's a power seat and I know they sit off the floor higher than a non-power seat but when I sit in the seat I don't really "sink in" as much as "sit on it". So I'm thinking if the foam was softer I'd sink in and be lower. It may have been re-stuffed incorrectly at some point too which could contribute to the "high" feeling. Any body have a better working knowledge of the science of seat foam?

 

If they used the OPG foams during a rebuild, that is why they sit high. They are the wrong density- to even "look" right, they need to be shaved before cover install- but even then they sit high. I've had 2 seats built for me with those foams. First without trimming looked terrible- second set i made sure the guy trimmed them, they looked good- but my head was still in the headliner.

The set i did for my 66 i used teh American Cushion Industry foams- i've read about these from other people and they are awesome. Out of the box they look better- no trimming needed for the right shape- and my head is not in the headliner.

Another note though... If the bottom seat springs in your seat have been replaced- that also could be why it sits high. A friend of mine had his seats rebuilt- drivers side needed all new lower spring assembly- pass side did not.

Sitting in his drivers seat its noticeably higher than the passenger side one.

Not sure how you would go about curing that one. It would take years for the sprigns themselves to "wear" in enough to sink... probably needs to manually stretch them some.

The title is a little misleading.

 

Seat buns - that is what they are often called.

Foam always sags and gets softer with age. If you need proof, come look at my couch cushions....
It will also start coming apart and turn into dust given the right conditions.
I never seen foam get firmer, but sometimes the vinyl covers can shrink and get harder.

There are several firmness levels of foam - I have been through that already.
Sitting on the firmest one may feel good when sitting just on the foam. BUT - when it is all put together in the seat, it will be lots firmer.
The medium density foam is the highest i would go in firmness. Yours could have been overstuffed, too.

The seat buns in my car also have heaters in them. The upholstery guy accidentally put the left bun in the right and vice versa. I ended up with hot crossed buns....
(luckily the L and R were the same.)

I know my replaced front seat is a lot softer than my original rear. Even though they look about the same, vinyl definitely gets harder with age.

 

There is some truth to all that; it just took the right conversation to bring it out... Scarey, huh...

Lady got the full set last year - front and rear - and it was a costly one. Nice and soft to ride on though. It was well worth it!
