71 442/Cutlass AC Duct

Hi All! I am new to the forum but I had a question. Is the duct work under the dash the same for an AC car & Heater only car? Is the control panel the same except for the face plate?

That's correct. The parts are different between A/C and non-A/C cars.

Another complication

...and the lower outlets (along the bottom of the dash) are different depending on whether you had an 8-track (two pieces) or not (one piece).

Were these actually separate molded parts, or did Olds simply cut the A/C duct to clear the 8 track player (similar to cutting the 70-72 consoles for the MT or dual gate)?

If you had a factory installed 8-track there were 2 seperate pieces and part numbers for the lower valance. If it was dealer installed there was a template included with the 8-track unit for cutting it.

The Specifics

Without an 8-track, it was part number 405500-Valence.
With an 8-track, it was part numbers 406645-Valence L.H. and 406644-Valence R.H.

Ahhh, I love the smell of part numbers in the morning.

The valance cutout template is #406656.
I'll be hacking mine in half next week after I install the 8-track and maybe I can make one.
I'm a carpenter and if I can't cut that straight and fit it right without a template shame on me.

I was planning on using a chain saw to do the deed.
The template copies will be available to the general public for a nominal printing fee plus $73.47 shipping and handling.

Don't cut it straight because it seems to me that there is a slight curve in that there valence...

Bringing back an old thread as a result of a post by 1971four4two's for sale add....

I have a set of split ducts in my 1971 but removed the 8-Track. Obviously I could still use the split duct but it sounds like they may be something that a 8-Track owner may prefer over cutting a one piece. What does the single duct look like? Are they easier to obtain than the two piece?

Good morning Dan. Yes, the one piece are much more common than the two piece. I've got some extras although the tab under the steering column is often broken off. Here's a couple pictures I took last year for another member here. John

Sounds like I might do well selling the two piece and picking up the one I need. How much does the broken stud affect installation?

dsolomon good luck selling your 8track ducts I have seen the 1 piece duct for $125 If yours are really nice IMO your 8track ones should be worth that or more! Cheers!
