Dashboard Pin Stripe

I have a '68 442 convertible. Is it supposed to have the double line pin stripe on the dash? Mine does not have it. Was that a dealer add-on, factory option or was it only used on certain models like a W30?

Thanks,
pdsap

Over the years I've had four 1968 442's. Two were Fremont built, two were Lansing built. Three out of four had the pin stripes as shown in the photos below. I'm certainly not an expert on 1968's so someone who knows for sure will have to speak up. I thought the one without may have been repainted. John

Thanks John. My 442 was built in Lansing. Not sure if that makes a difference. I am almost positive the dash was not repainted. The silver painted areas on the dash are still there but worn around the controls. That will be a project for spring. Also the painted areas around the clove box door and controls show typical ware for a car almost 50 yrs old. I believe the dash still has the original paint.... but who knows for sure. I'm not the first owner.

Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving!

The '68 4-4-2 model is supposed to have those dash stripes, whether convertible or coupe. My '68 Lansing convertible had them and they were tape. I replaced them with a twin tape stripe in 2007 when restoring the car. The "outside" stripe is slightly wider than the "inside" stripe but I don't recall the exact measurements. I believe the color of the stripe depended upon the color of the interior. The attached picture was taken of the interior of my '68 in March 1971.

Wow.... Thanks Randy for clearing that up. Funny thing, they don't show that stripe in any of the '68 442 sales brochure photos of the interior. Go figure... My interior is Teal so I guess the stripe should be white. Was the double stripe on the dash just a '68 model year thing for the 442?

It was a '68-only stripe for the dash. The only place I've found it is in the '68 assembly manual, section 1-3, page 116. It doesn't mention anything of the dual stripe dimensions but someone on this site has those actual dimensions and that's how I found out what they were. The pic below shows the stripe as I now have it.

3M has the dual stripes. It comes one roll. Its one single piece of tape with two stripes on it. I found it at the local full service auto body supply. Ill dig and try to find the dims and 3M part number.

Thank you again Randy and all. For me I guess the mystery of the stripe is solved.
Thanks again all!
