wood shifter **** vs plastic

I have not found a rhyme or reason for when or why a shifter would have the walnut shift **** vs the black plastic **** on a 70 dualgate. Didn't see it as an option either on the order form - anyone know how or why some came with plastic and others wood - the wood ones always seem to fetch a decent price

I have only seen the black plastic on dual gates, and the fake wood on regular floor shifters. I've never seen them the other way. John
