Sticky sport wheel

What is the remedy for an otherwise nice wheel?

You can clean it. I use wax and grease remover, final wash before painting a car, it does a good job. But IMO it will get sticky again. I've never seen/heard of a permenant fix. So I just keep cleaning mine when/as needed, usually once or twice per year.
There are probably a lot of other ways to clean them.
Good luck

Simple green and some brushes in the sink worked. I did it back in Jan. and it is still okay. The heat will get it sticky again I think....

I do not think there is a permanent cure, from what I have heard.
Wash it and time will tell. Mine has been cleen 3 months, but has been stored indoors. I need to put it out in the shed and see how it does.

The permanent cure is to have the original plastic grip all removed and have it recovered. I am thinking about that myself, but it will not be cheap.

Probably better off buying a good used one.

Well, today I went to move the wheel and guess what? It is sticky again!
So now the choices are recovering it or buying a repro. Probably same price.
Just can't win with this one...

Sorry for what? You did not say anything that bothered me at all.
I bought my wheel over a year ago for 200 and it was not bad. Over a year it got very bad. I cleaned it well in Jan. in hopes to install it this spring. But now it is getting sticky again. So I regret getting it but it was a risk i took. I never had thunk it. Maybe it is something here in the humid south that does it, who knows. I will look into recovering it before it gets chunked.

I think I rmemeber reading something about this. Apparently the material is constantly venting some gas, and the decomposition is what makes the wheel sticky. There is no cure.
Was it on CO? I will search.
Yup: see this thread. In there Allan references a bunch of other threads too.

Dawn and warm water will nicely remove the goo from the wheel, yes in time with exposure to uv rays it will get gnarly again. A minor inconvenience to retain the finish of your wheel. If you give your car any attention at a regular basis, this maintenance is nearly unnoticeable. Reproductions are available, have perfect gain intact, and likely do not bleed Karo syrup. However, they are also not complimentary and do not function any better than yours...
