Need to identify a '72 Cutlass part

Does anyone know what the metal interior trim piece (valance) beneath the rear window, joined by two end bracket trim pieces is called? I'm restoring a '72 442 and my piece is totally rotted out ...does anyone know where I can buy one of these?

Now this is not where you should buy it from, but here is the part you are talking about.
Others will surely offer this part too, but couldn't find it anywhere else very quickly.
This is from Yearone's site. No pics of it though. But it is the part you need.
Just search their site on the part number and you'll find it.
I'd bet that all of the others would have it as well though.

I think he is talking about the long metal piece that runs along the base of the rear glass but is located INSIDE THE CAR...the package tray tucks up under it.

Is that correct??

If so, I don't think it's repro'd....you would have to find a good used one or fab something.

Your car is a '72 442 hardtop correct?? If so, then it can't be the "rear filler panel" as only Supreme body styles had that part.

Not correct.

That part is the exterior sheet metal betwen the rear window and trunk.

The piece being discussed is not reproduced.

Molding-back window lower or lower back window garnish molding.
Try posting in parts wanted, there's a good chance somebody here may have one they would let go of. Offer enough and somebody will take the one off of their car and sell it to you.
My car's a wagon so I think it may be different?

I know they are re-poped for the Supreme, but not sure about the S body style. I got mine off ebay, for about $80 new.

My memory may be a little "hazy", but isn't that piece all part of the package shelf? All I need to do is look in the garage at mine, but I don't think it is an actual separate piece....it's molded with the package shelf. Like Patton said, on those "87" body styles, there is no piece between the rear glass and the decklid....decklid goes straight to the glass on the outside.

Nope. Its a welded part of the car that the bottom of the rear window seats on. I had to find a decent used part. Not too hard to replace but the rear glass has to come out which just required a push from my shoulder.

Ease of dissassembly!!

I think this part rests on top of the package tray metal and isn't actually part of it. Spot welded to it.

Did you cut out the old one and weld in the replacment part? I'm restoring a 72 cutlass S and have ordered the package tray but was going to try to live with the old bar in the back, but not sure of its condition once I get in to work the package tray... Does the tray just slide under it..? Is it reall a structure piece or just a space filler?

It is a real structural part that the window seals to. I removed the decklid and glass and drilled out a bunch of spot welds to replace mine. Once you get into it, it's kinda easy but there are spot welds in the channel that the decklid weatherstrip sits in as well.

Also, that part that 69Rman listed is for the Supreme model. That car has a metal exterior panel between the decklid and the back window. The S model and the 442 fastback style the decklid goes up to the rear window with only the chrome window trim between them.

I have some rust damage to the area where the rear window sweated on the bar, but it appears to be in fairly good structural conditions.... Hopeing to clean up and do the anti rust, prime and paint trick...without pulling the rear window... time will tell, especially since this seems to never end!! Plus I'll know a lot more when I go to install the new package tray. Thanks for the info!

If it's decent, I'd pull the rear window, and sandblast it and then Epoxy prime it to make sure it stays good.
