Need additional help finding these for 442
Hey all,
Well got the carpet and the newly redone seats in. Looking really good!! I have a few questions and am wondering if any of you hardcore Olds fans can help me out some more.
Steering wheel...I noticed today that it does have some cracks in it. Any website/parts dealers on trying to find a new repo or a suggestion on how to fix the old one?
Speaker...anyone know where I can find the original type of speaker that went in the back package tray for the 442 ('69). Looks like it's around a 5x8 (doesn't seem to measure out for a 6x9). Were these originally an AC Delco speaker??
Center Console. While its in good condition, the "ribbing" because it is black it is showing some wear. I'm wondering if there is a place where I can find a new one as well, or I was perhaps thinking of using some model paint with a small brush to take the time and replace the paint on the ribbing. Any help/suggestions are really appreciated. I'll try to get some new pictures up soon for you to see.

Before you chuck that steering wheel make sure it's not the "Sport" wheel for 1969. It was a one year style and is very hard to come by. I believe Jamesbo had a recent thread showing a photograph of one. You might do a search on steering wheels as I know there have been other threads discussing where to send one for restoration or where to by a kit to do it yourself.
I've seen the speakers on ebay, I don't remember the size but do remember the 10 ohm rating was important for the factory radio.
I'm not picturing the console ribbing, is this the texture in the console lid?

thanks john. Yes, the black rib is the texture on the center console with red on the base sides.
Its not a "sport" wheel. Its just the standard wheel with O L D S M O B I L E across the horn. I found a website qualityrestorations.com
However, they state they only have molds for up to 68.

Please post a pic of the "ribbing" you mention. I think you probably mean the raised edges on the chrome console plate that are cast into the plate around the shifter handle slide area and the PRND21 indicator area.
Nobody repro's this large chrome piece to my knowledge. Post some good pics and we can go from there. Below is a pic of a '67-69 console top plate I rehabbed somewhat. It's not factory original looking but if you saw it before the work began you'd see why.
There seems to be two types of steering wheel resto places. Most places grind out the cracks, fill the cracks with epoxy and then paint the whole wheel with whatever paint type/process they use.
I also think there are a FEW (if that many) places that actually cast a completely new plastic wheel using your old steel innards.
Of course, the prices are very different for the two processes. I don't know how well the "grind cracks/epoxy/paint" processes hold up as the original plastic in the wheels will continue to shrink and move with heat and time I suppose.
Go to these guys for a decent factory style replacement speaker. They ship quick and have reasonable pricing:

Jamesbro...thanks for posting.
John/ 70post.. the interior is red. The "ribbing" that I'm calling it are small black plastic raised type edges that run on the top of the console between the perimeter of the chrome.
Again, any help is really appreciated, I'm freeking stuck on this one!!
Thanks Guys.

4 speed??----Cool!!
First---that is a highly desirable piece. Never easy to find and next to impossible to find with nice bubble/pit free chrome top plates.
>Remove the ribbed chrome portions...the main one and the one on the glovebox top.
>Use lacquer thinner and a cutoff 1" or so paintbrush to strip the black paint off the ribbing. Get it ALL off.
>Do whatever polishing you want to do on the outer wide exposed chrome edge NOW. Then clean off all the excess chrome polish, etc. You don't want to do this step AFTER the painting.
>Mask off the outer chrome border and shoot the ribbed area with something like SEM Trim Black paint. You will have to decide what sheen you want but don't go too glossy and also don't go with a pure flat black. The Trim Black has a slight sheen...probably a slight satin finish which may be close to the original.
NOBODY repros the large metal chromed top pieces and if you have them rechromed by a place that does real nice pot metal chrome work it will be VERY EXPENSIVE. Thus, nice chrome tops like that are very desirable.
The Parts Place repros the plastic bases...but my bet is that it's not a perfect repro thus a nice original is still the most desirable.
If you have any pitting/bubbling IN THE RIBBED AREAS then you can smooth them out and do bodywork on them before they are painted over.

Thanks 70. Yeah, she's a four speed. Good girl, we love her. Would I make you even more excited if I told you she's also got all documentation (true story). Even have located window sticker and that is the only piece we are finalizing. She is our baby.
To be honest, the top chrome pieces (though the pictures don't do justice) are in great shape. Its just the black plastic areas that I'm trying to redo. As you can see in the steering wheel pics as well there are only a couple cracks that I want fixed. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions. This car was truly a "find".
Please. Keep all of your comments, suggestions coming. It is amazing how many of you are helping with this. I promise you full pictures of her when she's fully redone. We want to do this right.

If you are referring to the ribbed areas of the console top as "the black PLASTIC sections"....no....that is one large piece of chrome die cast metal. The whole piece--the wide chrome border and the ribbed area is ALL ONE DIE CAST METAL PIECE. The factory just masked off the chrome border and painted the METAL ribbed area black for some contrast (and to probably cut down a little on the bright chrome).
If you pull it apart to repaint the ribbed area you will see that it's one piece.

Console touchup
Hey,Grizzly, I have the identical interior[and console issues] in my red on red, 4-spd. 69 442 post cpe.! Looking forward to your pics when you fix up your console,as I'll be doing mine this winter. It's sort of like putting second in golf, with the other guy "showing you the line".Other prior threads DO support the use of the SEM black for the touch up.Not sure if we need to use any adhesion promotors [after careful cleaning]Let us know how it works out....Derek

Thanks 70. Sorry Jamesbro. I forget that auto's were also on the floor and a complete different console was also used.
70 your post makes sense now with the "one piece" thanks again.

Use the adhesion promoter. There's nothing special in the paint itself and vinyls and plastics don't accept paints as well as primed metals. They make the stuff for a reason (beyond getting you to buy another product).
