Lower Dash Repair
Lower Dash Repair
Now that the whole dash is out, I need to make some repairs to the lower plastic dash. Anyone have any experience with glues or plastics or fiberglass repairs of this type, and especially materials, that will stick to the plastic dash? Need to rebuild a couple of fastener mounts and one small broken area.
Did find lots of non-Olds parts in the dash.
Any assistance appreciated.

The saga continues. The dash issue centered on some broken posts that hold the grounding plates and fasten the lower dash to the metal dash.
What I came up with is this. I went out and got some metal tubes that I cut to the proper height of the broken post. I then trimmed up the broken post so that the tube fit over the broken plastic. Problem is with the glue.
Most of the glues or epoxyes don't hold well to some plastics. What I found that appears to work is called Plastic Welder (not a plug for it) that Ace hardware sells. Its a 2 part adhesive that has about a 4 min working life and sets up in about 15 min, and appears to really grip the plastic.
So, I mix up the glue, fill up the tube with it, and push it over the cut down plastic post, put a bit more around the base of the metal tube and let it sit overnight. Just have to drill a pilot hole to hold the original fastener.
Now just have to see how long it holds.

Have you tried ABS/PVC glue? I'm not sure what the dash is made of but the headlight buckets are ABS and the glue works great. I'd try it on a couple of spare pieces & see what happens
JB weld also works well as long as the piece is clean. You can also sand JB Weld
