Hi, I'm going to be installing new carpet in my 1971 cutlass convertible and though it is not a show car it is a nice daily driver during the warmer months in the northeast. I am not looking to deaden the sound because it's a convertible but is there any issues if I just lay down the new carpet which has a jute backing, trim it and put the seats back in? If after taking my old carpet out and I find I need to do some repairs I will take care of that.

There shouldn't be any issues, but there may be. You can't really tell 'til you try it. The sound proofing had some thickness, AC cars usually had an extra pad, the original jute was thicker than repro. Some carpets are cut a bit short on the sides near the vent panels. ACC + Trim Parts usually fit well, regardless. You can re-use the old jute, peel it off if needed, in addition to what's on the carpet. Sometimes you have to pad certain areas.

 

Couple tips
Use a soldering iron to make holes for the seat belts and seat mounts
Unroll the carpet so the big wrinkles smooth out, I've used a spray bottle to help the carpet smooth out
Make sure the carpet is fitting tight against the hump before doing any trimming
