headrest hardware sequence

Hello, I acquired a set of 71/72 bucket seats bare frame only a year ago and now the new covers are being installed, the tubes in the frame, one screw to the frame and then the top steel cover over the tubes with 2 screws securing it, then the seat cover wraps over top of the foam, tubes , and last would be the headrest lock mechanism .

I hope i'm describing this properly, I appreciate anyone to clarify that sequence.

Thanks, Marc

1. Bare Frames- Remove the headrest tubes (1 screw in the front/center holds it to the frame)
2. Install the buns
3. Use your fingers to locate the hole through the bun, then Install the stands THROUGH the bun. The bottom of them are sharp on purpose so they can go through the foam.
4. Carefully trim and push the bun out of the way just enough to make the stand touch the metal of the frame- then reinstall the front/center screw. there should be no foam under the stand.
5. install the cover, taking extra care during setup/alignment that the top welting bead of the cover is located ~1/2" AHEAD of the headrest stands. you do not want it to fall where the stands are or the bezel is going to have to go across the welt bead and it will look like crap.
6. With cover install completed, the outline of the headrest stand should be easily visible through the cover. Place the metal retainers over the headrest stand, use an AWL to poke out the two holes on each side- poke down and make sure you can locate the corresponding holes in the frame (if you did step 4 properly then it should be very easy to locate the frame holes with the awl)
7. Install the two long screws through the side holes that hold the metal retainers in place.
8. use a razor blade to carefully cut out the center hole for the headrest legs.
9. Install the chrome headrest locks (two short knurled screws)

I've got some good pics of the process in this thread among a lot more of how to install the buns & covers (post #34 specifically)

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply, the pics and your post describe the procedure. Beautiful work on those by the way, attention to detail like the sharp stand to perforate the foam, I will study those pics and read your post and figure it out.

I'm very grateful for your time, thank you.
