I've got some headliner sag very typical to this era, mostly around the dome lamp. I would like to redo the headliner, but I'm wondering if is possible to remove the original fabric, take off any old adhesive, then reglue it. The fabric is original and in very good shape, so it would be nice to keep it that way.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

 

I hope this is ethical. I was reading in another forum and the guy did a great DIY pictorial with step by step directions.

My buddy is in the Auto upholstry business, and I have watched him replace the fabric on many headliner's.
The only correct way is to remove the headliner, wire brush to remove all the dried glue and foam that is remaining. Purchase new material and the correct glue to replace it.
The foam that is attached to the material has dried and split away, so you will not be able to re-glue it.
Headliner material comes with a thin foam backing.
A shop will charge about $100.00 to do the job.
