arm rest base help

69 olds convert, arm rest bases - i just painted them w/ a paint supposedly for plastic and did not adhere well. i cleaned w/ soap/water prior and mineral spirits and let dry before spraying. paint was supposedly for plastic (local hardware store paint).

any ideas for cleaning up and redoing. where can i get correct Parchment paint.

if not, what is diff between arm rest bases. i looked for repo replacements and all say not for convert. My pad measures 11.5" so it should fit ones listed by OPG/Year One, etc. Is there another diff for converts. (screw holes/shape?).
thank you

I used dish soap, SEM soap and then wax and grease remover, then Bulldog adhesion promoter then SEM spray paint. They came out great and no peeling so far.
I did all my plastic interior parts with SEM paint, I'm sure they have a parchment color.

Adhesion promoter seems to be required. I ommited that when spraying with SEM and it will peel off with my fingernail.

arm rest bases are the same for front door of hardtop and conv.

I would eliminate the use of mineral spirits in your process, and follow 501Paratroppers advice and you should be ok.

good luck.

You are better off using your originals if the plastic is in good shape....just reshoot them using the procedure already discussed.

That, or find some nice used originals and paint them (but it's hard to find decent used bases in the lighter colors...typically VERY deteriorated). The repro bases would be my LAST choice.....they don't seem to fit very well.

As far as colors....you could take a look at SEM's Super White color. Despite it's name, it's not a pure or bright white....slightly off white.

Did anyone else have a color close to the parchment that looked good?
Did you end up using the SEMS ej69? if so do you have any pics?
Cheers

Someone suggested a final rinse in denatured alcohol - apply using a spray bottle. Does not leave a residue. I have tried this and it works well for cleaning parts before painting.

That'll work...be aware if you are doing this on plastic parts like armrest bases, etc you should allow plenty of time for the stuff to evaporate. These armrest bases can get slightly porous over time as they dry out (even bases that show no evidence of "chalkiness") so don't hose on the alcohol and immediately begin spraying.

Also....adhesion promoter should still be the next step after cleaning and prior to color spraying.
