I have a 1967 Cutlass. I am redoing the door panels. Got them from Legandary Interiors. They are really nice. I completed on panel in about 2-3 hours. Nice Saterday afternoon winter project. My problem is the lower molding. It is about 1 1/2" wide and 30+" long. The drivers side is really nicked up. Looks like someone may have used it as a kick raill. This is the trim that separates the carpet from the vinyl. Anyone know who makes a replacement for these. I have tried OPGI, Yearone and Fusick Catalogs to no avail. Your help is appreciated. No reproductions for this part is available! What you can do is remove yours and peck and file the dents out from the back and sand and polish them or pay to have it done. What happens to these is people let go of the seat belt and the end hits these and leaves dents.

 

Another thing, these have prongs that insert into the door panel, after 40+ years, they break off or rust away. What I did was use Aveco universal molding clips with a 1/4-20 nut and cut off the excess off the back of the panel with a cut off wheel.

 

Thanks....the prongs are in pretty good shape and can be reused. I can see where the seat belts could do this damage. It's like a little hammer has it it a couple of hunderd times. Where could I start looking tofind someone to rework these? Thanks so much for your help...Carl

 

Carl, I would imagine most stainless polishing shops would be able to handle this for you, one word of caution, you don't want to get too agressive with the file and sanding. Also, do not bead blast or sandblast these from behind or you will have dents left in the stainless where the prongs folded flat. Ask me how I know this!

 

which style of panel do you have? I might have a spare if it is not the C/S Holiday

 

You may need to just find a good spare from someone. I think that piece is stainless BUT IT'S WRAPPED around a steel strip that has the actual spikes. At least that's how it is on a '70 car. Thus...you can't get to the backside of the actual stainless to do any hammering, etc.

If the dings are more of a scratch-like deal (not dented) then you could sand them out, use progressively finer paper and ultimately polish them.

Again, if there's a steel "backer" or insert on the back then find a better piece.

 

Thanks, I believe it to be a C/S since that is the emblem on the inside of the door. But who knows....I ordered window fuzzies for a 67 C/S and they didn't fit (about 1 1/2" short).I guess I'll see if there is a polisher in my area and discuss with them. The studs are ok and not rusted. It's like someone took a small pean hammer to it. There are little dents. I believe 442garage that they were made by the seat belt buckle. Has anyone just had the carpet bound across the top? Know it's not original, but it might look better, if I can't get the trim refiniished. Thoughts? Thanks...Carl
