I have a 1964 Oldsmobile 98 convertible that i have been restoring for quite some time. In the front side panels, there are two chrome speakers. I wondered if this was an optional factory package or an aftermarket installation by a previous owner. I have not found any details or examples of other cars possessing this, but the chrome, assembly mechanism, and speakers looked very time-accurate. It appears like something that could've been installed at the factory. Attached is an image of it. Thank you all for the help!
Aftermarket. Going by appearance probably installed in 60s-70s for an underdash 8-track tape player.
A 1964 full-size Oldsmobile with any of the optional factory radios would have come with a single 4x10 speaker in the dash. If it had rear speaker or reverb option there'd have been a 6x9 speaker located under the package tray, or convertibles had one in a grille in the top center of the rear seat backrest. There was no stereo radio option.
Definitely old school, but not factory. Those were installed a long time ago and like rocketraider mentioned, probably part of an underdash 8-track stereo system.
You guys are correct, I talked with the previous owner and he stated those were already installed by the original owner prior to when he bought it, meaning that they were installed between 1964 and 1971. I'll keep them as it's a part of the car's history. and the style fits the 60's.
