on my 68 442 convert, I need to re-install the quarter window chrome sash that holds the rubber weatherstrip, that seals the side windows on my convertible. What do you guys recommend? Window tape from a autoglass shop? It would have to be REAL thin? Seems like I heard newspaper, but that is ridiculous. Right?

I used the thin glass setting tape when I did mine. Went on very snug.

 

Thanks for the response Randy! I stopped at Safelight and asked for the tape. He gave me two types, the wider black rubber is 1/16" thick and the felt stuff with an adhesive backing. The felt looks as though it will compress quite thin. I'll go out and try it and report back.

Check Glass shop first. I bought repro chrome pieces and they came with thin rubber but it was too thick. Would not go on and I mangled the chrome piece. The supplier said, don't use the rubber piece that comes with it and they were in the process of taking it out of future pieces they sell. Nice to learn that after the fact!!. Does not help that the repro metal is thinner.

Anyway... Long story short......I ended up taping black duct tape to the glass and it was perfect thickness. I put a little thin layer of urethane sealer over the duct tape and then tapped it on with rubber mallet. Used razor to cut excess tape. Fits perfect .

 

Use the thin rubber stuff. Wear latex or nitirle gloves, smear 3-n-1 oil on the rubber strip, lay the strip over the edge of the glass evenly and start the chrome strip from one end. Tap on the back of the strip gently, (as mentioned, the new ones are fairly flimsy, OEM is much stronger) with a rubber mallet and work the chrome strip in to place. The oil makes a mess, but will make it go together much easier AND causes the rubber to swell and make a strong bond between the glass and the chrome strip. Trim off the extra that is sticking out the sides with a razoer knife.

 

I'm also replacing some weatherstripping on my 72 vert, including the quarter window piece. How do I remove the old one?

 

Very carefully.........

I used the blade end of a large flat blade screwdriver against the edge of the chrome and tapped lightly with a plastic mallet. Be patient, don't try to pry or you can chip the glass. They are stubborn, but once you get it to move a bit, it will come the rest of the way pretty easily.

 

Thanks Randy. After I looked at it a while, it did seem that's the way to remove it, just wanted to make sure first.

 

So I found an automotive glass shop that new what I needed. I had them install my windshield in my 68 last summer too, and would highly recommend them.
The thin glass tape worked awesome with original chrome window sash. The repops were too narrow and not the right shape. It is amazing how messy and tacky that tape gets with oil on it. Works great and is stuck well.
