How to tell real 72 pace car?

I'm going to look at a partialy restored 72 H/O pace car w/ sunroof option, and the present time the body is off the finished frame and disassembed in many pieces. It is supposed to have the origional matching # engine and etc. What can I look for to identify it as what it is claimed to be? dhoff

Should have W45 on the data plate, and either a U or an X in the vin, if a rarer W30 equipped version. Only the Pace car had a sunroof in '72. Dual gate was standard, as is a black interior

Verifying the "numbers matching" engine and trans is easy. Just verify that the VIN derivative on the block and trans case matches the VIN of the car. The VIN derivative is a nine character stamping. The first character matches the first of the VIN and the last eight of the VIN derivative match the last eight of the VIN.
