I was curious as I saw a ad for a 1969 Cutlass Hurst Olds and that didn't sound right though I guess a 1969 442 Hurst Olds doesn't sound right either. When I looked at the pics I think I saw no other emblems on it than Hurst Olds- no 442 or Cutlass. I'm just interested, I don't plan to buy one though I would love to have one -especially a '68. My high school buddy's Dad worked at Demmer when they were doing the 68's Cool Stuff!!

Depends on the year, but anything after 69 used a Cutlass VIN. ALL were built in Lansing, MI.

There wasn't anything really special about the Cutlass VINs except where the engine code is concerned. Which obviously, is important, but the "last six" sequential numbering was just like any other car going down the assembly line.

Maybe this will help:

The 1968-69 H/O was a 442 and got a 34477xxx (for 1968) or 34487xxx (for 68-69) VIN
The 1972 H/O was a Cutlass Supreme and got a 3J57xxx or 3J67xxx VIN
The 1973-74 H/O was a Cutlass S Colonnade Hardtop Coupe and got a 3G37xxx VIN
The 1975 H/O was a Cutlass Supreme Hardtop Coupe and got a 3J57xxx VIN
The 1979 H/O was a Cutlass Calais 2dr and got a 3K47Rxxx VIN - that "R" in the fifth position of the VIN is the 350 Olds motor only used in the 1979 H/O.
The 1983-84 H/O was a Cutlass Calais 2dr and got a 1G3AK479xxx VIN - that "9" in the eighth position of the VIN is the high output 307 only used in the 83-84 H/O.

Greg, the '69 that you looked at, if the real deal, will not have 442 nor Cutlass badging anywhere on it.

I wouldn't read too much into that. The majority of people don't get details right.
