Hard to tell for certain from the picture but it looks like the coolant temperature sensor for the Computer Command Control system, not the sensor for the temp light or gauge... brought to you by one of JoeP's old posts...

That is an ORIGINAL coolant temp sensor for the CCC system. It's a major player in putting your engine into closed loop or not. Yours has suffered a fate many has seen over the years.
AC Delco/GM p/n 25036092, and is available some places as Standard Motor Products TX1. But the connector and sensor types must match.
The connector is ACDelco/GM p/n 12014843. Which is what you have, but in a couple of pieces.
In the mid-80s, they resolved issues with the pigtail coming loose/breaking (like yours), and corrosion, etc., causing the computer to stay in open loop. Not good. So they came out with an updated sensor/pigtail package to replace any warranty or failed parts that got replaced. Soon after, they started selling the new sensor and pigtail separate.
If you want the updated ECM sensor and connector, you will need AC Delco PT169, GM# 12101899 superseded to 88987993 for the sensor connector. The sensor itself is GM# 12146312 superseded to 15326386.

I have an 84 Toronado Caliente and the CTS and temp sender look
exactly the same (right down to the broken connector).
I see the information regarding the updated CTS / pigtail combination. For the Caliente with digital dash gauge would you know is this same part would work (or which one would)?

Are these just for olds with the CCC or a all gm ccc v8's cars?
Mine is a M/C SS 86 and most likely fine. but if the same, I'll print this and add it to the dealership service manual just in case I ever need this.
