84 Hurst Olds value?

84 Hurst Olds value?

I am considering a 1984 Hurst Olds, in need of total restoration. Runs and drives, AC works, hard rop, Silver paint.

I am just wondering about the value of a car like this. I imagine a few thousand would do so long as its not totally rotted out?

What are the problem areas I should look for when I go to see it? I will get some more details for you as well when I look at it.

I dont see too many of these cars around....

Thanks for any thoughts.

If it is in need of total restoration... Between $1000 and $3000. If it is rusty or ANY H/O parts are missing it drops real fast. If the lightning Rods, wing, wing tips, and front air dam are all there and in good condition, that alone is worth close to $2K. Almost for sure going to be missing the front air dam or at least broken. If it has the posi rear end, that is worth $800+. When these cars need total restoration they are only worth what the rare parts add up to... tops. The owner will not like that but it is the truth.

The problem with them are that you can still find low mile original one for less than the price of restoring one.

a big area of concern with G-Bodies are rust in the rear frame rails and rust on the lower doors and cracking by the top front of the door.

thanks for the replies.

I hadnt thought of it, but yes I think youre right in saying the parts are where the value is at for this one. I will keep that in mind when I look it over.

Well I got a look at the 84 H/O today

It is definitely a real H/O
vin 9
17084554 quadrajet
8.5" rear
lightning rods
H/O hood
H/O wing

The bad:
doors are SHOT
front air dam MIA
Paint is SHOT
brake hydraulics bad

The car starts, runs and drives
Solid frame, fenders and quarters
Has a small carb problem - no problem cause thats my specialty
Transmission 200-4r shifted and drove fine.
Interior is used but not bad - cracked dash and sagging headliner is about all.

Someone put a cheezy tint film on the windows.

All in all I like the car, and dont see too many like it. I have to think if I want a full resto project, cause this thing needs it. I do have my 83 Cutlass Supreme I was going to part out anyhow. Maybe take the doors from that.

come to think of it, this was missing the dual snorkel air cleaner with chrome lid

and it had an aftermarket steering wheel.

so its missing some pieces that wuld need to be replaced.

Think I am going to pass this one up.

Guy is stuck at $3k "I know what Ive got", "Ill paint it and get $10k for it"
I think he overestimates his chances.

I pointed out its missing the air cleaner, steering wheel and front air dam, as well as the Rotted doors and shot paint - to no avail. Like talking to the wall.

I could almost see paying it because its a car I dont see often,
But I just think I can get more car for my money. Just not that car I guess LOL.

Many times it is hard to walk away from a car like that but you will likely find you are better off. Good job on not rushing into it. I was in the same boat with an 84 H/O 3 years ago. I picked it up for $1800 and planned to part it out. After I got it I found that I should have passed on it. I ended up getting it running and driving and sold it complete but only for what I had in it. About $2100

Why does everyone want/pay $800+ for those lighting rod shifters? I mean, its a cool shifter and I'd love to have one in my '69 but Jesus H Christ, its just a damn shifter and its not made of gold! I'd pay $150 for a complete one, hell maybe even $200. I don't see how they could be worth anymore than that.

The 3 speed is not all that high priced. They are on ebay all the time. The 4 speeds were only in 83-84 H/Os and no others made for the aftermarket. With the 4 speeds it is simply supply and demand. It is a desirable shifter and not many nice ones out there.

Totally agree with Jensenracing's value assessment of these cars & parts.


So many '83 & '84 HOs for sale in poor condition and owner's hold value way higher than they are worth. Unfortunately many are now being parted out because of their condition.
I used to own both an '83 & '84 HO and love them. The cost of restoration of one of these is way more than the value afterwords so you better love the car because you most likely will not get money back if you have to sell.


Personally I would not take any project car of this type and would have to be an original low mileage car. But many of those seem to be overpriced too. That 30K mile car posted has just been lowered to $16,900. Looks good but wondering why it has an '83 horn cap on steering wheel? To me, anything over $15K is high and shouldn't need anything. Also documentation is a plus to their value.


NOS parts get big money for these cars, I got $800 for an NOS Lightning Rod Shifter plate! People with perfect cars pay that money for the good parts.

This car was a real moneypit if the idea was to bring it back to original new condition.

There are probably a dozen guys circling, waiting on the price to drop to "part-it-out" prices.

I just bought the car and can not move the t top handles for removal of the tops any thoughts?

I am still watching this car. so tempting but the price is too much.

Food for thought: for comparison, the current "classic car" book value for a pristine non-Hurst '84 Cutlass Supreme is in the $4k to $5k range and you've given a better & more honest description of the car in this forum than the seller has in his ad

... he has had this car for sale for ~11 weeks, though; if you really want the car, that's (potentially) a big negotiating tactic for you, that you were there a few months ago making an offer that he didn't take and he still owns the car, maybe you can now get it for closer to what it is really worth. If he still holds-out for the "big score" then make certain he has your number, walk away, and don't view the ad again

In the owners defense, it is a running driving, generally original piece.

Yea it needs some work but thats half the fun.

.....see how I talk myself into it.....

swap meet/car corral season is almost upon us. I will have to see what shows up at the events I go to.
