1969 hurst olds - starter - water pump
Hello again to the experts:
Can you provide me with the stock part number for water pump (Air Conditioning) and starter? The car is my 1969 hurst olds (455) numbers matching restoration project.
I appreciate the site and everyone's help.
Phillip

The water pump should have a casting number on it of 400269 (that's the heavy duty water pump for cars with A/C or heavy duty cooling). Those casting numbers are sometimes hard to read, though. You might see it as 400268, or even 400289. If you see any of those casting numbers on an Olds water pump, it's a 400269. The starter is a bit trickier! I've done a lot of research on this and I've come to the conclusion that starters for the '68 and '69 model years were the same as far as part number and characteristics go. There are a lot of starters listed in both the '69 and '68 shop manuals but they really don't say who gets what. The '69 assembly manual doesn't say anything about starter part numbers but, in the '68 assembly manual, section 6-0, page 110, in the upper right hand corner table, it specifically identifies the 1108333 starter as the unit for the 455 high compression engine. Accordingly, since virtually the same part numbers for starters were used for both years, I conclude that the 1108333 starter is the correct unit for the '69 Hurst Olds. It's an educated guess but I haven't seen anything that tells me different to date.

Randy,
Very thourough information; I did see that the alternator could be one of two. The 110833 makes sense.
Regarding Waterpump information; thank you as well.
I do have some parts book coming that I hope will help me understand my cars better.
I appreciate your time and knowledge!

Just a general note here. Especially with water pumps and starters (and carbs for that matter too), one is only "matching" the case number. The guts are what really "make" the part number.
Starters: Best of my knowledge, there were two basic V8 starters (at least '65-'70 era). A "regular" and a higher torque version. The part numbers may have changed over the years, but it was still basically the same two. When you bought a starter, you had 3 options:
1. New
2. "Factory" rebuild (all guts replaced), done through GM.
3. "Local" rebuild (whatever didn't work was replaced) sometimes as good as a factory rebuild.
Case numbers were totally ignored in any rebuilds. So unless you have a *known* original or new one, what's inside could be anything.
Water pumps: They are still rebuilding correct '60s numbered water pump cores. I recently ordered one at Murrays. Cheap as a water pump comes. I wanted it to be a correct numbered one for my '69 442. I asked them when I ordered it, if I don't like it when it comes in (meaning if it isn't the right casting number) can I refuse it, they said sure. It came in with the correct casting number.

Cameo White is right (and I'm a poet and don't know it!). I know there are a lot of source books out there. My favorite is the Product Information Manual (PIM), more commonly referred to as the assembly manual. Nearly all of the part numbers are in there (except starters, of which I've only found specific reference for use in the '68 Cutlass/442 PIM).

Hi Phillip,
Thank you for your generous comments about my cars. Just keep in mind, though; they are only poor man's H/Os! An H/O is the ultimate, in my opinion. I've attached a picture of my very first car - a '69 442 that someone had removed the original engine and transmission and installed a '70 455 and a THM with a '70 console before I bought it in 1972 for $1800. It's the closest I ever got to an H/O! Best Regards, Randy C.

HO1969,
I can't help with the alternator number for the AC cars; someone sent me a page from the assembly manual to verify the correct number for my non-AC car, but I've lost it. I do know that the alternator used on AC cars had a different amperage rating, and therefore a different part number.
I'll see if I have a pdf of it on my work computer tomorrow; if so, I'll check if the page I got was only for the non-AC cars or not.
With a 5-16 build date, your car was very late in the run.
How far along is your resto or refreshening?

FYI, the water pump for cars without A/C or heavy duty cooling is 398681. On the alternators, the 852 is 55amp, the 853 is 37amp; both with internal voltage regulators for the '69 442, W30, W32 and H/O.

Cameo, Thanks again for your imput. This site is really a breath of fresh air. Everyone of you guys are top notch; sharing your knowledge and love for Olds is very appreciated.
My "body off" restoration is about 2-3 months from completion. I'm looking at a total of 9 months maybe 10 total. Like a fine wine; it won't be served until its time.
I'm ready to see her in the garage; let me tell you.
Take care,
Phillip

Cameo,
I found that you can throw darts in the wind and hope for the best; when it comes to estimating time of restoration. So far I have three different players helping me; but all have good intent, heart and the will to see it finished. I have to just have patience I guess.
I've managed to locate my starter! My frame is going for media blasting as we speak; the body is ready for finishing touches. All the mechanicals are pretty much done. I'm looking at an original AMFM Radio; thats the last of any major purchase. Any tips you have in putting everything back together would be appreciated. We basically filmed the car prior and will put everything back as seen; to include decals, stickers and stamps.
Have a good one!,

Hi Phillip - as far as posting pictures go, I started out as an amatuer and am still at that state. I just poked around the headings at the top of the pate. In "User CP", I was able to edit that area to the left of this message - add a picture, put in my home town, and so forth. As far as adding pictures to this text, I scrolled down to "manage attachments", an area underneath the message as you write it, clicked on it, and up comes a page that you can either take pictures from your computer, or from a web site, and post them. I had trouble figuring out how to take pictures I had in "My Pictures" in my computer and put them in a message, but I eventually figured it out. My operating system is Windows XP - if yours is not, your process might be the same, a little different, or a lot different! Anyway, I typed in "C:\\My Documents\My Pictures", and then clicked on "browse", and that file popped up on my screen. After that, I just clicked on the picture I wanted on the screen and its document address would appear in that block. It looks like you can attach up to 5 pictures. After that, I clicked on "upload" and they all go to the message you are typing. I then close that window and go back to the message I'm typing. I'll "preview post" before I send it out to be sure the pictures I wanted to attach are there. That's about the best way I can describe it. I have yet to figure out the smiley faces. I hope it works for you. Best Regards, Randy C.
