442 Stripes

I have a base model 72 Cutlass that I am in the process of cloning to a 442 package. I was thinking about using these types of Body Side Stripes and was wondering if it was a correct W-29 stripes.

No, they aren't right from what I can see on this iPad. The W29 stripes are clearly laid out in the 1972 Cutlass Assembly Manual. That's a very small investment to get the right stripe pattern. BTW, 1972 did not offer a rear deck spoiler on any of the Cutlass bodies. I have pics of a survivor W29 with only 4500 original miles on my other puter. If you want some of them PMS me your email and I'll send them to you. Pretty sure they're already posted somewhere on this site. Use W29 stripes as a search.

the hood stripe is wrong. look at my hood on my w29 (reproduced by phoenix graphics) the side stripe is 3 thin stripes (not reproduced) factory painted all these stripes on originally.

One more thing, lose the rocker stainless too. That was one of the deletes that made up the W29 package. Don't forget to add the FE2 suspension, that's pretty easy and improves the handling quite a bit.

Yes Allan, I would appreciate any photos you have. Now just one other question. Next year I was going to replace this hood for a Thornton OAI Hood with the Large White Stripes (W-30?) I guess. If I do that, would it look miss-matched with the W-29 stripes on the side?

Yes , I already did that as you can see in the 5th picture. I also swapped out my deck lid as it had the long oldsmobile molding at the base. I redid the entire front grille, pulled the 350 and replaced with a 455 big block, dual exhaust w/ cut out bumpers, swapped out Tranny from a 350 to 400, swapped out a 2.73 to 3.42 posi rear end, replaced the the carb with a 1977 QJ 4 bbl (800-cfm) ...Getting close to finishing it and cannot wait to actually driving it.

Not necessarily. The W25 hood was a factory option for all 2 door 72 coupes. The hood stripe package you're talking about is for the W30 cars which also incorporate the 2 stripes ( one wide/one narrow) on the sides. IMO you could add the hood with its wide stripes and still keep the 3 narrow W29 stripes. Since it's going to be a tribute car I don't think you'll have any issues with that. Too bad Olds never produced W29 side emblems like they did with W30, W31, and W32.

Weren't the hood stripes part of the W-25 hood as well?

Honestly, IDK. The assembly manual shows the hood striping on page 162 of section 1-4.. But according to the added reference on page 16 of section 0, the stripes were part of the W25 W30 (see notes section). That could be interpreted 2 ways IMO.

It's my understanding stripes came with the W-25 hood unless they were deleted.

You may be right. I have never seen a W25 hood without them. But with the W29 steel hood, only the outline of the upper surfaces should have stripes. There wasn't any fill, and contrary to what some folks think, the only Cutlass that I'm aware of having deck lid wide stripes is the 72 HO. All the rest only had the twin thin lines that tapered to one at the quarter panel down turns.

As we all know, there are more 442's on the road now than ever left the factory, and most of them have the W25 hood - again - more than ever left the factory.

Stencil kits

Be careful with repo stencil kits. My car is in the shop being color sanded and having w 30 stripes applied right now. The shop has done quite a few high end W 30 cars And the guy knows his stuff. He has used the same supplier for stencils on all his cars. He sent the stencils back that he ordered for my car because the hood decals were not correct. This was a reputable supplier who had a bad run of material.

Jp are those Decals or did you use the the Stencils? I have been thinking about using the Decal Stripes, but I was wondering about the quality of the Decal.
