Hi,

I'm trying to find out what tire options existed in 1977 for the cutlass with 15" super stock style wheels. All of the factory pictures I've seen show the baby whitewalls, appear to be 3/4" or in that range.

Was that the only tire available from the factory? Were raised white letters also available?

I ordered mine with blackwalls. Can't answer the question about the raised white letters.

 

Sure you could order white lettered tires. Most popular at the time were whitewalls, like we ordered with our '76 Vista Cruiser. Here is a couple pics with original tires

 

Thank you for the responses. My Grandmother is 99% sure her car came with raised whites from the dealership. Looks like I'll be putting those back on it.

Can someone chime in on what the closest size would be to the original G78-15? In current tire sizes?

If you want white letters you'll prob need to go with a 225/70. They look good on those cars.

 

Just went with 235/70's on my 77. Looks good but I put the raised white letters on the inside. Only because it was delivered with black walls and the tires I wanted came with raised white letters.

+ 1 on the 225/70's if you don't want to stray much wider than the stock widths from back then.

Me personally ...

I'd do 255/60's if I were in your shoes.

The dealership brochure shows RWL and whitewalls on 1977 442s. Note that they also got the year of the first 442 wrong.

Textbook for the era. False advertising and unintentional false advertising... On top of it all it would of been in their best interest to laud the true original 442. As it would somewhat help minimize the enormous chasm between a 1965 442 and a 77.
