As many of you know on 68 cutlass/442 the hood doesn't lift as high as 67 and 69 models.

Would 69 hinges fix this? I've seen some post regarding this in the past but couldn't find them.

What's the quick and easiest fix?

I'm with Chris - the quickest and easiest fix is to learn to duck. This has been a problem since the 1968 cars were new. The hinges are unique to the 1968 models (and full size cars used the same hinges that year). They do not interchange with any other hinges. 1969 hinges can be used if you either also use 1969 fenders (the mounting bolts are different) or modify your 68 fenders to accept the 69 hinges. Neither quick nor easy.

I have gotten pretty good at keeping my head out of the way but occasionally BANG! Ouch.

 

At least it is not like on a 70 where the hood tooth gets you. When I had a 68 I used to have a shipping blanket that I made into a kind of envelope I would put on the front of the hood when I worked on it so it didn't hurt so bad. Did the same with a large towel for the 70.

 

Another easy and cheap solution...

 

The hood tooth on the '69 will also get you!

I've probably said this before, but when i bought my '70 SX in 1976, I smacked my head a lot, and swore a lot, eventually it became natural not to hit my head w/o thinking about it. fast forward 20 years and I bought my '69, and I've never wacked my head, I must have bonked it into my long term memory.

 

So you're saying you knocked some sense into yourself?

I'm guessing that the fact that the 69 tooth is only half as tall as the 70 tooth helps.

 

theres a solution..i posted on it, but cant find the post..theres other hinges that bolt right on and change the angle...i will look some more...

I'm in the same position and have a set of like-new '69 hinges I want to install. I'm willing to alter my '68 fenders if I can get a template for the holes to be drilled. Oh, well. I'm interested in any other solutions, as well.

i researched this for some time and the info is true as far as i can tell..i bought some new hinges, i just havent changed them out...in a few weeks i will be able to try them and tell for sure

heres what i came up with..these all interchange and work on a 68 without altering the fenders

I can get you a template off a fender I have that has all 5 holes. Will scale it & scan & email when I get the chance. With Turkeyday may not be till next week
