Working on a '56 Super 88 w/air

Does anyone know if the spring in the picture is supposed to be there or anywhere? Its wired to the strut bar and I'm assuming to help assist in the returning of the cable but I'm not sure if it should be hooked to something otherthan what it is in the picture. Also, does anyone have detailed or know where to get detailed pictures of this year/make/model? I would love to compare things to see if I'm missing anything. Any help is appreciated.

That looks like the flapper door for the cooling ventilation. This is a push pull cable. the spring is not original. It looks like someone installed the spring to force the flappler door to stay closed for some reason.

Just a shot in the dark and may sound strange but is your heater control valve working? If it is stuck in the open position it will be on all the time and this may be a Joe Magee fix to slow down the hot air interning the cab. Just a thought....Tedd

Well, here is my other question. I was told the heater core needs to be replaced because its leaking. Currently it is bypassed with some parts under the dash half apart. I haven't had time to really dive into it but I saw the spring and was curious. Does that add to the story?

My experience is with 55 Olds and you would disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core from the firewall side of the car not under the dash, a 56 maybe different so I could be wrong for your year car. Also if you are going to remove the heater core it will only come out from the dash side of the car and is usually glued (sealed ) to the dash side of the firewall and can be a bear to free up. There again this is what it takes for a 55 your car could be different....Tedd

That's what my uncle was trying to do when changing it. take it out from under the dash but he was having a problem doing so. I'm left with trying to figure it out now.

I highly recommend you getting a factory motor manual for your year car if you don't already have one ,That alone will save you a ton of grief. Many repairs are illustrated and that again is worth a thousand words in most cases.......Tedd

I've got one but it doesn't include everything. Sometimes it nice to just see some detailed pictures of how it looked before someone modified these cars. google search only gives me so many pictures and details. for instance the carb vacuum lines. Mine were hacked to put a Holley on but now I'm going back to the original carb and it would be nice to know where each line ran instead of guessing. I guess I'm just too particular with some of this stuff. thanks for the help!

Off the top of my head (on a 55 anyway) there should only be two vacuum hoses. the big one at the rear of the carb(if you have power brakes) and one for the distributor advance. I don't think there are anymore. The fuel pump supplies vacuum for the wiper motor and windshield washers everything else is a manual push pull device. If you are seeing more hoses than what I noted perhaps you are looking at the washer fluid lines and vacuum lines that operate the washer motor that is located on top of your washer fluid jar which is located on the left side in front of the fuel pump and behind the radiator.. Just a thought...Tedd

I've got the big one in the back for the brakes. I've got a small one that runs from the left side of the carb (when standing in front of the car) to the distributor and I've got two that run from fuel pump. One is vacuum and one is fuel line. The washer pump has no lines from the jar to the firewall motor(?). I haven't looked at that part close enough to get it working.
