Gonna replace the altenator on the convertible this weekend and the vr as well. Is the voltage regulator located on the firewall, inner apron or inside the altenator like the newer cars?

Don't know for sure, but I believe it's in the upper center of the firewall. It should have a 4? wire black connector, a black square metal top & held in by 3 screws with 3/8" heads.
On second thought, it may be internally regulated?? I don't know when they made the switch, but I'm sure someone here will know.

 

If the plug on your alternator is square it is an external regulator. If the plug is rectangular it is an internal regulator. Hope this helps.

 

A 1973 Delta 88 should have an internally regulated alternator - a 10SI to be exact. To verify, look at the connector on the alternator. The one on the left is a 10SI. The one on the right is the older style with an external regulator:

That being said, why do you want to change it? Charging problems?

Thanks everyone,
The generator light is on and the altenator is old as dirt. Finally moving it from the driveway where it was rotting to my place. Got new (used) tires, a battery, fresh gas, fuel filter, air cleaner and PVC valve already. Gotta get it cross town to my place and the muffler shop.
My altenator has the internal regulator - thanks for the pics and advice. Gonna replace the belt as well. Easy on the older cars, everything is right up front.

 

Did you check the voltage with the engine running?
