69 442 M21 with A/C question

Got a question - it's my understanding that the M21 could not be ordered with A/C. I'm about to look at a 69 that is advertised with factory A/C and the original M21. I know that sometimes things made it out of the factory that technically were not on the order form, but does anyone know if this combination of the M21 and A/C is possible?
Appreciate the help.

Nope not installed at the factory for 100% sure, but the dealer could've installed the A/C when bought. The transmission will have a stamp on it with a partial VIN # that should match the actual VIN of the car if it's original.

So, there wasn't necessarily an engineering or performance problem that would not allow someone to put AC on the car (kind of like the W motors not producing enough vacuum for power brakes)? I'll definitely check the numbers - thanks.

I would tend to think that someone changed the trans. To install factory A/C at the dealership would not have been cheap or easy. If you do have the "factory" installed A/C and the serial number IS stamped (by the factory) on the case then you have a real oddity. Not saying it wasn't possible, though highly unlikely.

Well looking at availability in the book it states

C60 (A/C) not available with M21 (4-speed close ratio), V01 (HD Radiator for G88 or G89) and G88 (3.91:1 rear end) OR G89 (4.33:1 rear end) OR V02 (HD Radiator for 3.42:1 rear end) and G92 (3.42:1 rear end)

So that tells me that it must be a M20 (4-speed wide ratio) with A/C, 3.23:1 rear end and 350 hp 400 engine. As 3.23:1 rear wasn't available with M21.

Look for Code XG on the trans that stands for M20. Code XF stands for M21. The rear gear ratio code will be on the right rear inboard side of the axle housing tube and if it is a 3.23:1 the code will either be SE, S6, SF or S7 depending on if it is G80 (posi) and or optional brakes (Power or Power w/ Front Discs) I hope this helps

No Problem 442tom Just be sure to ask to see any and all documentation that goes with the car as well. That may add value in itself and sometimes prove to be the icing on the cake as far as how it was "born"
