Grinding noise from dash while driving
Grinding noise from dash while driving
Hi!
I've got this grinding noise coming from the dash when I'm driving my 72 Cutlass.
I'm thinking it's the speedometer wire. Are there any known "easy fixes" to noise coming from the wire, like lubing it or something, or is the wire probably worn out and need a change?
Not the handiest guy alive, so maybe there's a walkthrough or similar for changing the speedometer wire?
Thanks!

There's two pieces to a cable, the outer housing and the inner cable.
The cable is available seperatly, and very affordable!
In my experience, a new lubricated cable would cure the problem for the next 50 years.
Use the graphite lubricant, with a decent glob on the speedo end!!
Usually you can reach it from under the dash, and pull it down for access.
Some are trim to fit - compare the two for length.
Use a pliers to pull it straight out, squirt some graphite in the housing, and feed the new one in.
Install on speedo - done!

Pull the core from the casing, use WD40 to clean and disolve the old dried lube, then lightly regrease and insert back into the casing. Be gentle to coax the last 1/2" into the tranny fitting.

Thanks everybody!
I'll try to pull the old wire and lube it!
I specially want to thank Lady72nRob71! Also do you mind if I link to your pic and guide from my DIY forum?
