How loud you want it Glasspacks are loudest and look like a salami stick flowmasters or other better exhaust give deeper tone.

Also pipe diameter, routing, and configuration make a difference. Larger and straighter usually means louder and deeper. An X or Y pipe usually mellows it out, tail pipes mellow it out, turn-downs before the axle make it louder (especially inside). Lots of variables.

Most of the muffler/exhaust system sites on the internet have sound tracks that allow you to sample what your exhaust might sound like in your car. I used glass packs and like the sound others think its too loud

I have Smithy's steel paks on our '68 Cutlass convertible (Big Red),the pipes run out under the back bumper. Same on our '92 Custom Cruiser, but the pipes turn out just behind the back wheels. Really nice, low rumble. No headers. Our '68 Flat Top Wagon (Silver Bullet) has glass pakes (don't know the brand) that run out just after the rear wheels, to the side. A bit louder, after the steel gets blown out. Love them all!!!!!

Our cars came from the factory with Turbo style mufflers, so that is what i stick with.
Dynomax Super Turbo's are my preferance, but i've been told that Summit's brand of turbo mufflers sound pretty decent too. Nice and cheap.

Gardner exhaust sells an awesome bolt on kit, not cheap, but quality is excellent. I'll be going with them as soon as mine rusts out.

I can't stand flowmasters... My neighbor has a set on his 66 chevelle. Sounds like its a bad mother... but its all sound- no motor to back it up.

I'll let the engine determine the sound level of my car- the mufflers job is to quiet it down, not make it louder.

I have one set of Flowmasters and wish I didn't IMHO they're too loud. But I like the Dynomax super turbo.

I run headers, collector extensions, 3" pipe, Walker 21468 diesel mufflers, 3" Torque Tech tailpipes on my 66.
