trying to id the olds
I found the tag under the hood up by the windshield, and i have id some of it, but the one number i found has me stumped, it is stamped on the oil fill tube... and is 0586600 the car was built in fremont in 70 it was sold to the person i bought it from on 8 4 70, a 1 owner rig, i pulled the air cleaner today and got a shock, it is a 2 barrel carb care, the way it runs i thought was a four.... so what does this particluar number mean??

Mike, I am new to this site also but I will take a stab at it. I believe the first number indicates that it is a 70 and the other numbers are the casting number of the block. If I am wrong someone will be along shortly to correct me.

Actually, that's the engine unit number and yes the 0 indicates 1970, but the rest is just a sequential build number. If you have the Protect-O-Plate, you can correlate the engine unit number to the VIN, but otherwise you cannot.

OK, now being old and somewhat uninformed, what is the protect o plate ???
the only thing i have is the plate near the windshield with all kinds of numbers and such, but there are no matching numbers to the ones on the filler tube..
here is what i have
st 7033277 bf 00963 bdy
tr 904 58 58 pnt i think the last 58 is the paint code
07a 546994 08 0014
and of course the oil filler of 0586600
the casting number on the block behind the water pump is typical for a 350 that much i have figured out
there is more to this than the 58 chevy p/u that i`ll have on the road this summer...
it`s still better than sittin in bars......
Thanks for all the help

This is an oldsmobile protecto plate:
![](https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums/gallery/data/500/medium/protecto_plate3.jpg)
The upper left is the dealer zone number
Lower left is the VIN.
Upper right is the date of sale.
Lower right is the vehicle milage at time of sale.
To me, the important numbers on the body plate refer to paint, seats or trim and thats only if you're after a perfect restoration as new. The all important number is the VIN. Most car guys want the VIN to match on the engine and transmission. Enjoy your car....and pick up too!

It would, however, be on the build sheet.
