Torque Converter Manufacture
Any recommendations on a manufacture for the torque converter for TH400 1971 442. Staying pure stock. There's remanufactured units and looking for you guys advice. Also, what is its' purpose and how does it work? Any additional advise is welcome. As always, thanks again!

Well, if you're staying pure stock, then you would only have one choice, a stock converter. Sure there are many shops that can properly rebuild a factory converter, but in most cases, you would be better buying an aftermarket one, probably cheaper too. You can spend a lot on converters (up to $1200+), but in most cases, unless you're drag racing or have some other special requirement, there are off the shelf ones that would be fine. I suggest calling one of the big 3 (ATI, TCI, Hughes) and talking to tech for a recommendation. You should be prepared with info such as weight of the car, cam, rear gear, power options, and intended use of the car.
One great off the shelf converter I recommend to many is the TCI break-away. It's a good, all around converter that isn't expensive.
Explaining the internal working of a converter is outside of the scope of these forums. I suggest Google-ing and doing some research if you want to know the general theory of converters.

Thanks so much for the info. I did goggle it and am fully versed on it now. Don't dawn on me to do that. Been too easy. Also, Patton gave me the the full run down. Thanks again!

COANs are good, as are Continental, PTC, Redneck, and a handful of others. Those are in the 600-800+ buck range, and for a stock car, kind of a waste if you're not racing. All of those will stall them to your spec, fyi. The BOP crowd really like Continental, they make them pretty tight, perfect for a high torque engine.
