T-3 and Amber Headlights

I'm sure someone here can help on at least part of these questions.
Let's start off with the once available plastic reproductions of T-3 headlights or even non T-3 replacements. I'm not really sure which they were. Anyone have a source for them?
Secondly, in 66/67 there was an option that had amber headlights in the high beam position. Not sure if they were for fog or otherwise. Would like to know the purpose of them. Also would like to know if available anywhere.
Thanks,
Smitty

I have never heard of the amber inner headlights option. Autronic eye and Night Watch, or whatever it was named, are all the headlight options I know of.

Lectric Limited offers reproduction T3 bulbs for GM cars from the late 50's to early 70's.

I don't remember any plastic T3's. I do remember seeing amber and blue in both 7" and 5 3/4, but I don't believe they were stock. I wouldn't mind a pair of blue ones.

One thing you shouldn't do is to switch on the highbeams during foggy weather. This headlamp size is internationally standardized and you can get amber-tinted mirror assemblies from France which require separate H4 bulbs. This is how they look:

The standardized round ones are also available:

Back in the day some folk had amber plastic covers that went over the headlights. On a 4 light set up I would suspect they were used only on the outer/low beam lights. Their purpose was to function as a fog light.

I know what you are talking about. They are glass direct replacements. These were not factory but they did this alot back in the day on Trans Am and SCCA cars. I liked the way they look and was able to get a set for my 71 w30. They look cool but do not do much for lighting unless its foggy out. I purchased them from a place online/mailorder and they were like 8.00 each if i remember. I will have to look thru my reciepts and see if I can get you a name or number. I could email you pictures but I am unsure how to post them here. I need to figure out the picture thingy. Funny I can build a race motor restore numerous cars fabricate almost anything run just about any machine, But still dont know how to post pictures. Sad. Sorry for the rant I will try to find that information and post it here. Good luck in your search.

Thanks guys. The ones from France, got a link or name of manufacturer?
I don't have to worry about legal issues. I'm looking into these for my '67 which is race and show only. I took the plates off a long time ago to keep myself out of trouble.

Ed, I'm about like you. Though I did figure out the picture thing with the help of several friends.

Actually I'm just now getting to look. The T-3 set from Lectric-Limited is $150. If the car was a perfect restoration that would be fine. But just too much in my opinion. At least for now anyhow.

The T-3s are expensive but are VERY nice, And I think you would be hard pressed to tell them from originals other than the repops work. I went thru numerous originals only to have them blow quickly. I was paying 10 to 20 dollars each and getting no life. I figure I spent 80 bucks on ones that blew. As far as ambers go they came from replacementlightbulbs.com Their phone number is (336)882-2852. They are located in High Point N.C. The part number is 4412A-GE. They were 9.05 back in 2011. I bought 3 to have a spare. The gentleman told me there is a variation in the color and he would personally open boxes and get me 3 that were close. Only problem is these have tractor connections so your harness wont plug right in. You can either cut you harness and put eyes on it for screws or as I did I made 2 small jumper wires with a spade on one end and an eye on the other. This allows me to swap the T-#s in when I go to a show and put the ambers back in for driving. I must I love them. Hope I have helped.

So far www.replacementlightbulbs.com has the winning bid. $9.05 a bulb for the yellows. I like the jumper idea and is probably what I would have came up with anyhow. Just don't like cutting the factory harness unless I have to. Keep the ideas coming guys. I did check out the LED stuff but just don't fit the style I don't think. Would like to maybe find something that takes the H4 bulb without the LED ring in it. Might be suitable. I'll continue to search. Got a few months before I'll be needing them. Often takes me that long to find just the right option.

I'll have to email them and see if they have the blue style. Thanks for the link.

I forgot to mention that you could use the ordinary European/Asian light assembly. Then, insert a colored H4 bulb:

There is no noticable difference between the appearance of using the colored bulb or the colored mirror. The clear lamp assembly is much easier to obtain than a replacement colored one. Here is an e-bay link to some name brand bulbs: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw...osram&_sacat=0

Here's a Datsun lamp which has identicle configurations to what you intend to replace: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Hella-Scheinw...item2585ce750c

It's a replacement part for thie following vehicle, as well as others using double headlights:

You could also get order these parts from any European or Japanese car dealer. But, they would certainly cost way more than the ones you could locate yourself

There shouldn't be legal issues with the conversion. There certainly are issues going the other way around, when an American car is imported into Europe which would require replacing the sealed beam unit with an H4

Awesome! Looks like I'll be watching the pick-a-part yard for those. Honestly never thought about looking at the cars like a Datsun. I did do a search last night but everything came up BMW and or with the LED rings in them.
Thanks a bunch.

If you get lucky and find those in a yard, it's only because the vehicle was directly imported. I don't know about any vehicle sold after 1989. But, anything previous was equipped with the sealed beam units

Straight from the garage, in case you're looking for good H1 lights:

Hella brand direct "Made in Germany" H1 bulb replacement lights for

4.75" low bream: PAR-46 / H5006
low_beam.jpg

* Light: Hella "1B3 114 179-001"
* Parking-/day time running light holder: Hella "9FF 085 642-001"
* Rear sealing cap: Hella "9HD 140 976-001"

4.75" high beam: PAR-46 / H5001
high_beam.jpg

* Light: Hella "1K3 114 155-001"
* Rear sealing cap: Hella "9HD 140 977-001"

Stainless rings and headlight cups fit 100%, the holes of the cups and the "2-light" base plate needs enlargement for the sealing caps, though.

I'm about to write a short how-to in a few days, I'm in the middle of replacing my lights right now.

Yellow H1 bulbs should be available at your local auto store or the web.

He just created that thread before he put the link here. Probably no searching needed.
