Sun Distributor Tester

Does anyone know the major differences between the 400, 404, 500, 504 Sun testers?

Does anyone know of a running one in Rhode Island or close by?

Thanks.

the 400-series were lower end units, it lacked the condenser tester unit. the differences in the 400-series model numbers relate to the era it was made in and the max. rpm it would spin. they were also known as the S.D.T. series.
example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sun-Distribu...item2a2c592b76

the 500-series were the deluxe models which included the condenser tester. same thing about the max. rpm and era as the 400-series. also known as the M.D.T. series.
example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUN-DISTRIBU...8821d3&vxp=mtr

generally, the higher the last digit in the model number, the higher the max rpm was.

Thanks Bill. Would either series be good for working with a 1970 + distributor?

Thanks Bill. Would either series be good for working with a 1970 + distributor? The rpm they spin at (sorry - at which they spin) is 1/2 the equivalent engine rpm correct?

either one would do the job, if your condenser condition is unknown, just replace it. yes, the rpm shown on the sun unit is distributor rpm, crankshaft rpm is double that.

Thanks Bill. A mate of mine in Newport wants to go halves on one. He works with all sorts of classic and antique cars.
If I get one I will do free diagnostics for CO members.

Great idea... if you don't need a super pretty one, there are some on epay for more like 500-600

The issue is that we want to see one working before we buy it since by all reports they are very expensive to repair. This limits the search to an area around Rhode Island.
