Good morning everyone,
I have a small problem with my '67 Delta 88. My steering column is broken. It's almost impossible to find a new one, hence my question. I've found various universal columns. But the connection to the servo pump is always different. Is there some kind of adapter or other way to do this?
I would post a thread in the parts wanted section here on Classic Olds. I'll bet someone has what you need, though shipping will be high to Germany. Seems to me if you alter your car to fit a aftermarket column you will regret it. Good luck.
The universal columns are designed around the 1969-newer GM columns. Unless it specifically says otherwise, the diameter at the top end will be larger than the diameter of your steering wheel hub. How about you tell us EXACTLY what is wrong with yours, preferably with pictures. Unless the column has been damaged in an accident, I find it hard to believe that it is irreparable.
OK, I'll try to explain what my plan was. Originally, I wanted to replace the turn signal switch. I got the steering wheel off normally. Then I noticed that the black covers on the steering column had to come off too. I then tried to get the steering shaft bearing off. It broke in the attempt. The ball bearing fell out. Then I saw that some springs had fallen out from behind it. Unfortunately, I was too ambitious with the dismantling. I took almost the entire car apart and put it back together again. But I failed at that part. It was actually clear to me that I would rather fit a new column because I don't think I can put it back together again. It scares me 😅
PS:
I think it shouldn't be a problem to repair. But right now, I don't even know how to remove the steering bearing and housing. And whether I can put it back together without a diagram or something similar.
I'll bet you can fix that. You need the factory service manual- it should show disassembly diagrams, etc. If only parts you need are that collar and bearing that shouldn't be so bad. Hopefully Joe will come back on- he will know...
I own a 67 Delta. I had to replace the turn signal switch. NOTHING that you beat on has do come apart to do that. It took me about 30 minutes and the steering column didn't have to come out of the car. If you don't have a factory Chassis Service Manual, step away from the sledge hammer and get one first.
I actually have this book, Joe. It's on CD, but I have it. But I have to tell you, that's just how I am sometimes. I just thought it couldn't be any worse. I've taken apart worse things.
that's how it is now 😁
well, to answer your original question, you can find adapter joints from aftermarket suppliers like Flaming River, and Borgeson. It looks like you have a 3/4 Double D (DD) at the end of the pictured steering column. You need to measure the OD and how many splines are on the steering box in the car. Then you can find a joint like this to put the two together. Borgeson Universal 013452 Borgeson Universal Steering U-Joints | Summit Racing

Thanks a lot. That's what I was looking for. I'll consider repairing it first. Otherwise, I'll go with the alternative.
