There is no "CarFax" for the older cars, no database to find history quickly. If you are unsure of what you are doing you can seek professional help, such as
http://www.autoappraisal.com/
Or if you post your location there may be someone on here who lives near you with good knowledge who might be willing to look at it for you.
Good luck

When it comes to an old Oldsmobile, the answer to this question is always YES.

It matters not what the condition of the car is. Your boyfriend will cherish you for the mere fact that you thought enough of him to buy him a car, not a t-shirt. The famous words are never more true than they are here:

It is the thought that counts.

I drove it, it seems to run good/fast car. Body is in decent condition, a little rust on the bumpers. The shifter says hurst, it's obviously not the original. Is there a way that I can tell if it is or not?

It's possible for a car like this to have big problems that aren't immediately apparent to an inexperienced buyer. It's sweet of you to think of buying your boyfriend a car, but if it was me, I would think it was sweeter if you told me about it and gave me a chance to look at it myself first. If you buy it and it does have problems, your boyfriend is going to be stuck in a situation where his girlfriend had good intentions and did something really sweet by buying him a car which could have big problems and be more trouble than it's worth. My vote is that you have to tell him about it before you buy it and let him make the decision.

Good Idea to ask the forum first Crystal.

I would contact a nearby autoshop that will inspect the car for any major issues. You can ask them to run a compression test on the engine and check the frame and other parts of the car for any damage.

Its a standard inspection that usually runs about $100 if you want it done thoroughly.

In my opinion its worth it because the $100 inspection can save you big bucks in the future.

If you really wanted help Im sure that a forum member nearby can inspect the car for little to no cost if you were to disclose your location.

I agree, have someone look it over if you aren't familiar with old cars and the typical danger and decay signs. I wish I had done so with my car.
