Pinch Weld Removal 72 442 Conv.

Have removed the front screws that go through the window fuzzies - have tried gently pulling towards car's mid line - no dice, I'm just bending it up. Is there a special technique/tool for this?

There are more screws holding the moldings in place. Open the top about 1/2 way and get a small mirror to view the underside of the moldings from the area now available with the top relaxed. I think you'll find another 5 or 6 of them. Once they are removed, the moldings will come off.

Once you get the screws out of the the pinchweld molding fasteners - as I recall there are 8 or 9 of them (and, like 69442C said you need to put your top about half way down to access those screws from in front and below the molding pieces) - you may have to work against a sealant (or sealant tape) to get everything away from the body of the car. Just be gentle when you do it. As well, you might find that the screws that hold the pinch weld molding fasteners in place are rusted and hard to remove - again, just be patient and take your time. You might have to replace some (or all) of those screws when you put it back together again. When I put mine back together, I didn't use any sealant, although my '68 Body Service Manual says something about using a sealant tape. Once the molding fasteners were in place, the pinchweld simply snapped onto the fasteners.

I've had to take a die grinder to those screws before to get them off. You can "gently" make a small slot in the head of the screw & then use a flat screwdriver to get them out. The heat from the die grinder helps break them loose too, or at least I think it does.
