OE 70 442 Harrison Radiator Tag Questions

Prepping the original recored Harrison EC radiator out of my 70 W30 A/C for paint. Two questions on the tag:

1) Is the tag supposed to be painted? If so, was it painted on the radiator, or is it a different color and gloss?

2) I found some numbers stamped on the edge of the tag that I had not noticed before. Anyone know what these signify? See pics below

That's my phone number to call in case you found my radiator.

Good question.
Every tag I have seen has either been rusted or painted black to match the radiator but I could not tell you whether they were repainted or original.

Before sending it off to get recored, I should have looked under the tag to see if the radiator surface underneath it was painted. The tag has been rusty for some time.

Anyone else know? I want to finish painting the radiator this morning.

Thanks.

The numbers on the edge of the tag 3017107 is the part number for the assembly, and the 8 at the end is some sort of date code/ batch number.

I have always seen the tags affixed to the radiator assembly at the time of painting.

Is this a four row radiator? The "EC" coded radiator assemblies that I have noted in '70 have had "IF" and "CI" tanks on a size "74" core. Just curious, as I know your W car is extremely original.

The tag looks to be welded to the tank, so I am guessing it would have been attached prior to painting as it would be difficult to weld through a layer of paint.

If you look in the radiator chart on page 50 of section 11 in your 1970 Assembly Manual (aka Product Information Manual), you'll see that 3017107 is the GM part number for radiator code EC for 442s with the V01 cooling system.

Interestingly, a different part number, 3014707, is also listed for an EC radiator for 442s with C60 (which precedes V01, as the chart is to be read left to right). I don't know if this is a typo or if they really did make slightly different part numbers out of the same EC radiators.

Thanks for posting the pics. I've neved seen a part number on the tag like that before, and my own 70 W-30 w/AC is missing the tag (but does have the original radiator).

By the way, I agree with the others: the radiator would be painted after the tag was installed.

Good eye Lance. Those codes are weird on the tag/radiator.

Brian
I double checked the radiator usage chart in the assembly manual with the chart in the inspectors guide. They are different. The one in the inspectors guide seem to be "more" correct, as it has the same part number as the other EC radiators. Like you said maybe a typo error?

K (Oct) date code, does that match up with your cars build date? Would you post a picture of the drivers side tank showing where it is attached to the core. As Lance touched on, the IF is usually a 4 core and an IA is a 3 core

Shifty Sidney (still a cool screen name)

The tank on the driver's side has the raised IF embossing. It is definitely a four row core - see the pics. I am pretty sure this radiator had not been out of the car before. When I pulled it, I VERY CAREFULLY removed the top and bottom OE sealing OE strips that were still attached to the core so I can clean and reinstall them along with the original insulating saddles (also seen in the pics). I am now worried about the LH tank code not matching the tag. Also below, you can see where I masked off the tag and painted in in Detail Gray. Thanks to all the responses, especially from Fred, I will strip the paint off it and respray in Rad. Black.

Thanks again to everyone for helping me get it correct.

Also SS, the body tag is 01D (4th week Jan '70) and the broadcast card date is Jan 27th.

Thanks Joe. You, Rocket Vapor or Shifty Sidney have any further poop on the IA tag vs. IF DS tank thing? I hope it is correct. Finished picture below.

I would put the tag on the radiator if you think it was on there originally. It does not seem to agree with what is suppose to be on there, but if your think it is original then leave it. It would not be a major task if you decide to change it at a later time. The date code seems to be ok for your car.....My 2 cents.
