Odometer swapping

I replaced the speedometer in my 71 442 as the needle wasn't acting correctly. Is swapping the odometer section from the original speedo into the replacement unit difficult? They are approximately 40,000 miles apart so I would like the correct mileage showing. Thanks

It isn't difficult, but it does require care as there are fiddley little parts to align. It's also very easy to simply set the odo in the new speedo to the mileage you want.

Is there a step by step procedure to reset the odometer on this forum? Resetting sounds more favorable than switching the odometer units themselves. Any help on this would be most appreciated. Thanks Joe for the info.

Brian,
I have restored many of these speedos, & also fuel gauges, & can give you step by step instructions but it is easier over the phone than internet. Feel free to give me a call when you can & I'll guide you through it?

Yes, it's been posted here before but here ya go. Although this is blue oval, the pieces and principles are the same for GM. I took one apart at the boneyard and it wasn't hard. Keep yourself organized and put parts where you know where they are.

I'd get one of these alignment strips before you work on your speedo. It pushes over the lock tabs on the odometer numbers & keeps all the numbers lined up. It's made of thin plastic & after 40 plus years it'll be very brittle & will probably break when you try to take it off. The parts place has it for $5 pt#IN3643Z. All the numbers on the roll won't stay lined up without it.

Thanks everyone for the help, very much appreciated. I have a few spares so I have back up if a part breaks.

alternate method: jack up the car rear end, start it, place in reverse, let run for a while

its better if you do it in a house on stilts. with all glass walls.
