Non fan shroud car?

My 71 442, water pump just went, so I am changing that and have some odd issues.
1 no fan shroud, top plate doesn't have holes for it.
2 radiator is sitting tilted back, but is fitting correctly in the bottom and top plate. Is this normal?
It is a non air, no power steering,no power brakes. 4 speed car
Thanks

Can you get us a picture of your top plate & a couple from the sides? It sounds like something is not right somewhere.
Also, if your water pump is orginal, you might want to keep it. It could be a valuable core to someone to rebuild & you need to compare the height of the old & new pump.

Mike,
I responded to your pm. If you are unfamiliar with the Olds water pumps be sure to get the correct one. There were 3 different lengths for 71. If you car is a W-30 it should have a pump that is roughly 5.5" tall. Non W-30 should be 5" tall. A/C water pumps were 6" tall in 71. Measure what you have, mounting surface to top of flange that fan bolts to. Original pumps will have either a "1" or "2" casting. depending upon application. If you have either I suggest you not use it as a core. I am interested in buying a "2" pump.

You can look at your top plate as you described and also at the bottom of the core support. Cars that came with shrouds had 2 small tabs on the bottom of the core support. These tabs secured the shroud at the bottom. You can check this to prove/disprove.

As oldspackrat suggested some picts would help. Good luck.

Thanks for that information!
I will get pictures tomorrow. I just got the water pump..... Not happy, got it from summit, is aluminum and says japan on it.. It will be going back.
I thought I was to get the 5.5 in one. I just measured mine and it's 5 in. Not easy to find.

So you car is a W-30? I am guessing it has 3:42 gears. I think some of the pumps from year to year have different size outlets(where the bottom radiator hose connects) on the water pumps. Just something else to be aware of. 72 used the same pump.

Not a w-30. . This is my 4th cutlass/442. All had air, I rebuilt two of them.
Never had this much of a problem with finding a water pump..
What about a rebuild kit?

Sorry I did not read your post correctly. You stated you had a 5" tall pump. I do have a correct core if you are interested. $75 shipped.

I would guess a parts house would be able to get one for you at a cheaper price, although it probably wont be 100% factory correct. It is all in what you want. $199 sounds high to me. Good luck

I think someone told me a month or so ago that if you order a pump for a '68 Cutlass, not sure which engine, that it is the 5" version. Good luck.

Fusick sells a pump for a 70 455. 5" height . I know the output diameter is different than the 71. But what about using a 70 lower hose?

I believe the radiators are different from 70 to 71. They are different sizes where the hose attaches to bottom of radiator. One is bigger than the other. 71 and 72 are the same.

Have you looked at Supercars Unlimited? They are Olds people and carry a lot of mechanical items.

All above who mentioned the '70 and earlier ('68-'70) water pumps have a larger 2.0" inlet are correct. The lower radiator outlet nipple is also larger (1.75") and the hose has larger inlet/outlet sizes.

'68-'70 = 1.75" x 2"
'71-up = 1.5" x 1.75"

Okay, supercars unlimited does not have it. BUT. I actually looked at my casting number. 384783, that is a 1970. Which mean my radiator might be wrong also.

You are having my kind of luck.

My books show
384783 is for all w/o A/C or HD cooling
384786 is for all with A/C or HD cooling
I do not think that casting number is for a 70.

I would GUESS the 384783 is 5" tall and 384786 is 5.5" tall. I would take it off and go to the parts house and match it up.

Found one. Summit has one, says it's for a 1970. With 1,3/4 inlet. The picture shows the casting number of a 71. Only problem is that I have to wait two weeks to get it.

Update on the water pump.. Nobody has one! Summit just informed me that they cannot get it. I can't find a rebuild kit.

shelf for a few years. P/N 408328 D2
with a 341 cast date. looks to be 1 3/4 outlet.

if you have the 70 2" inlet rad with the 70 2" pump now you better make sure you get the the big mouth water pump also. if the rad is the 71 72 smaller inlet you can still use the 2" pump but with a sleeve around the rad mouth with the 70 hose.

I have contact info for WP rebuilders

Don't "guess" at water pump castings vs. length and inlet ID- e-mail a request and obtain the official Rocket Science Pulleys and Water Pumps database! It's half-done, half-assed, and way better than GUESSING. I did actual measurements and it now has PHOTOS also.

Oh, and I have some core and very few rebuilt pumps on hand with factory castings. Pretty sure I have a perfect 5.1" WP.

Change the "443" below to the obvious correct number, and send a request to:

typically non-ac, non-heavy duty cooling, with a fixed 4-blade fan bolted right to the WP.

I have not seen a request for the WP and pulleys database.
