Need help getting 425 going

I am trying to get a 1966 Delta 88 with 60k original miles up and running. It has a 425 in it. I am having issues getting it to fire up. I have fresh gas in carb and I have verified that the squirters are working. I also have spark. When I crank the engine over it acts like it wants to fire up but it will not run. Small backfires through carb. I moved the plug wires 180 degrees and it backfires extremely loud. I set the engine to TDC #1 on compression stroke and verified that the rotor was pointing to #1 cylinder. However, I am starting to think that I may have somehow done that wrong.

The car hasn’t run in four years. Last time it was running it sucked up a bunch of rust from the tank and quit. We tried to get it going but gave up and finally decided to mess with it again.

Make sure gas is good, check points for corrosion from sitting, make sure plug wires are properly placed, Olds dist. turns counter clockwise. 18436572 Make sure connections on coil are good. Just go over basics. You may want to remove valve covers and check to see rockers are all moving while cranking.

Timing

Yes I agree..dist. is 180 out.pull the plugs, and put a finger on #1. Turn eng by the crank bolt till the compression comes up.notice the pulley timing marks..the dist pointer should be at #1 .rewire if not. Should be fine.

Try advancing the timing a little bit after you double check for #1 TDC, correct firing order, and point gap

And just so we're all clear, the firing order goes COUNTERCLOCKWISE on an Olds distributor cap.
