Seriously, 577476 is a 1961-62 394 block. The 4 1/8 is the bore, which also confirms it's a 394. The G on the head indicates a 1962 motor.

That 4 1/8 is the bore size which works out to a 394. If it still has the original paint on it, aqua or green would be 1959-1960. Red blocks are 1961-1964. A picture would help

thanks for the info. the engine came with a 57 super 88 and painted gold (the engine color for 57). I was told it was rebuilt many years ago, so the red paint maybe long gone. Do napa and other serious parts stores still have gasket kits for this engine, or does one have to be purchased from a specialty company? The engine runs just setting on the ground, but i would like to regasket it before putting it into the car. Also what was the HP of these engines? it has what appears to be the factory intake and carburetor. would the numbers on the head indicate the original HP?
really appreciate any additional info you may have.

Rockauto shows a FelPro gasket set available, so NAPA could order it. Don't expect them to have it in stock. That's why I pretty much just get parts online these days. Saves two trips to the auto parts store, as nothing for my cars is ever in stock except oil filters.
