KPH Speedo for my 1975 Cutlass?
So I'm not finding any KPH models again so I'm just going to modify a MPH gauge. I noticed this set online:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/74-75...item3cb4ccf853
This one has a different "other" gage with real indicators instead of just idiot lights. Would these gauges be plug and play for me? If so I might ****** them up and mod them for MPH with at the very least a label maker or something.
I was also toying around with the idea of taking apart the gauge, scanning the faceplate with my scanner, then adding KPH via computer. I could made a nice little overlay to sit on top of what's there. I know it wouldn't light up at night (it's back lit, right?), but it would look pretty decent in the day IMHO. Do these gauges come apart and go back together pretty easy or are they super delicate and shouldn't be messed with?

Well, minus the column shift that's what I need. I just ordered at column shifted mph speedo and rally pack gage off ebay for like $40. I'm going to swap in the rally pack gauge (drop in?) and take apart the speedo, scan the face with my computer, photochop it to remove the shift indicator, and change it to kph. I'll laminate it and hopefully slide it over the one that's on there now with out breaking anything and see how it turns out.
I just went to a car show here in Yokohama last week end and all of the American cars (almost 100 of them) had the original speedos in MPH. I talked to a guy that drove his 48 Jeep to the show and he said no modifications are required for most cars, he had to put some marker lights on his 48 even though it was not required because the inspector kept coming back and pinging him on it so instead of fighting with the guy he said he put them on.
Hmm, I'm not sure how they managed that. I might be under different rules since mine will be an "E" plate, and not a normal kana japanese plate, but bottom line it comes down to the inspector who will do it, and they said I need kph. I'd love to find some regs showing they are wrong and sticking it under their noses, but I'm not willing to put in the leg work to find out those regs. Also, I was told everything just changed this past October to make the rules more strict. Those guys could have been inspected before then. They also see a lot of us round eye types bringing cars in down here (Oki isn't THAT big) so they are used to giving us a hard time. I don't know how much that plays into it.

Would this work?

I've never seen that wire and little box in any of the pics of other speedo's before, and this auction says it's for a 442. Also, what would be a good price to offer? I still think $200 is pretty steep.

Hey Skylines
I am hopefully going to look at some SSIII rims from a guy who just bought 2 1975 parts cars, one a Cutlass and the other is a 442. I asked about the speedo's. He was not sure about the mph/kph. The 442 is a floor shift. He will check them this weekend and let me know. Would you be interested in one if its KPH. You would prefer floor shift, correct? What is one worth? His rim price is reasonable. He bought them for the engines. Please let me know. I hope to see them within a week.

Yes, I'd love to grab one! I do prefer floor shifted, but if column shift will work and just has the shift indicator on it (which I'm assuming wouldn't work with my floor shift) I'm fine with that. Maybe offer him $50 and see what he says? Does that sound like a fair price?
Hello, its Wed. The guy has the cars now. He and his freinds are stripping them on Thursday and Friday. I plan to go on Friday to get my rims. He will let me know RE: the speedometer.

Do you know if this guy is scrapping them or what he plans to do with them ? Is there any way you can get this guys contact info or at least see if he'll post it over on the 73-77 board ?

Not trying to cut in on skylines deal for the speedo, just want to make sure some good stuff doesn't get wasted.
Thanks.

Little bump for this. The car is on the road and I'm currently using my hand drawn KPH speedo. The odometer doesn't in fact need to count kph, miles is fine. Anybody ever able to track down a KPH speedo? I actually can use a column shift one by breaking off the gear indicator needle and using a black marker to cover up the gear selection stuff. Not perfect, but much better than what I have now
Mike77 posted a column shift KPH speedo not to long ago and mentioned it to you. Also, I made a similar suggestion about covering up the gear selection lettering on the same post. Check with him for an update.

The drive gear in the transmission is the same for MPH and KPH speedometers. The gearing in the odometer is different for the KPH, since it has to register differently. I would think that a speedometer restoration shop in the states that does silk screening could make a new face for you with the proper markings, especially since there is a picture posted in this thread showing what it looks like.
I've got a couple people hunting for me (I think I PM'd Mike77 about it too a while back) so hopefully somebody can come up with something. I will update, thanks for the help guys.
