Installing a shifter and console

Hello all,

I purchased a used automatic floor shifter and console for my 72 cutlass. Are there any tips for getting the console over the shifter after the shifter is mounted? I removed the shifter ball of course, but can’t place the console over it. It looks like there are drift pins holding the “T” handle in place, do I punch these out? Also, the car goes into park, but will not let me remove the key without moving it myself (on the steering column) should I adjust the cable itself?

Thanks

It's not the cable, but the linkage from the trans to the column that is loose. Mine is the same way. I just deal with it but it should probably be refurbished with new bushings and that would take care of the problem.

Yes, you need to slide the pins out of the T portion of the handle to get the console over the shifter, then reinstall the T and pins.
