identifying factory cams

Is there any practical way to ID the olds cams ? I have a couple I am trying to get the grind #'s for. On the very back of them are 3 numerals in white paint. I was under the impression that this would be the last three digits of the grind. I have looked at the camshaft listings and find no corresponding numbers. The cam out of a 68 toro had 250. I can always have the cams mic'ed ,but there has to be a better way.
