Factory build quality (or not)

Factory build quality (or not)
I just replaced the u-joints on my 67 Delta in preparation for reinstalling the engine and trans. Since it's an automatic, it has the driveshaft with the rubber isolator between two concentric tubes. The open end of the tube was facing forward, with the trans yoke attached to the inner tube. I didn't think that was right, and a quick glance at the 67 PIM confirms that the driveshaft should be oriented the other way. I assumed this was just an idiot who previously replaced the u-joints... until I found that these were the original factory u-joints still retained by the injection molded plastic rings, so it's been that way for half a century.
DOH!
