Changing hood hinge and spring

I need to replace the hood hinge on my SX, as it drops about an inch at the back just before it is in the fully closed position. I presume the pivot is worn out. In order to do this is it safest to remove the hood, or is there a method to do it with the hood still on that is fairly uneventful? Should the spring be removed while on the car or off and what is the best method? Anybody able to offer suggestions? Thanks.

I never do this alone. I use more than one person everytime. Even three is nice. I place thick rags like towels at the firewall just under the back corners of the hood. Then remove the upper or forward hood bolts first while two support the hood then the back bolts. I usually put the hood on the roof but I have a few shipping blankets on it and the windshield to protect them. Then removed the bolts that hold the hinges to the fenders and replace them.

I can do a good set of hood hinges with springs.

I was thinking removal of the hood is best, I don't want to risk any damage. I do have a replacement hinge, thanks.

Always replace the springs and hinges as a pair. You said "hinge" as in singular above.

SMS in New Hampshire rebuilds and re-phosphates hood hinges.

They do a great job.
