Car engine fire

My dad called to tell me he had a fuel fire under the hood of his 56 98 but he got it under control before anything melted. He shot it with a chemical extinguisher and while it put it out, there is the yellowish residue all over. He vacuumed as much as he could and tried to wipe/ hose it down. I seem to remember talk of those type extinguishers jacking up the paint, glass, metl etc. Is there a solution the car needs washed with or is it expect paintwork and new windshield time. Ill pass the info to him ASAP. Thanks

It depends on what type of extinguisher was used. Certain chemicals do more damage than others.

Sounds like the way to go. Let us know what he comes up with.

According to the MSDS on the Ansul web site; the main ingredients are:
Calcium Carbonate
Ammonium Sulfate
Ammonium Phosphate

I was always afraid of what the powdered chemicals would do to the car, so I bought a CO2 extinguisher for the garage and carry a Halon extinguisher in the vehicle.

The company told him their stuff is only mildly corrosive and to vacuum up any residue then wash with mild soap and water. I guess time will tell if the paint begins to bubble but so far so good. He's going to get a halinon as back up.
